J.L. has generously provided an excerpt to whet our appetite for the book, as well…

They heard a rustling, outside of where they were and startled them both. Adela motioned for Donavan to be silent, she was trying to figure out what to do, there was only way out and she could hear them were not too far off from the entrance. She signaled for him to follow her and they crept towards the only exit hoping to get out unnoticed or wait out whoever was lurking around. Donavan was crouched down resting on one knee reaching behind him to remove his jacket, he reached down for his sword, to remember he had forget fully left it at the house. He was cursing himself, because he remembered thinking about it, but believed here he didn’t need it. He noticed a rather straight stick almost shoulder length under the bush, quietly he reached over and silently as possible pulled it to his side; he began to knock off the small stem that would only get in his way, “Adela, please no matter what, stay here.”

She grabbed at his arm, “It might be nothing, but if it is, I will fight better knowing that you are safe.” She shook her head in protest, but realized he was going to do what he thought was needed.

With the branch behind his back, one hand over his shoulder the over grabbing by the hip on the opposite side of the body he stocked out into the open of the crick completely on noticed. This was only momentary, the two men were far larger than him, brown leather, huge builds and long hair, as soon as they noticed him, they charged. He was a bit unnerved, but ready for whatever was about to be, as the first one was within a few feet of him, he let go of the stick with his hand over his shoulder and brought up that end up and into the man’s chin knocking him down into the water causing a huge splash. Donavan already had the caught in his left hand ,but in the air above his head, bringing his left hand, which was at his hips height up and straight out in front of his face with the arms full extension, brought down the hand above his head shoving the stick straight out and through the hand already in place, smashing the second man square in the face making him stumble back a few feet. Donavan in a snap had pulled back the stick through the hand and flipped the one hand in front of the over causing the opposite end of the stick to come up and smack the brute up under the teeth, sending into the deeper part of the freezing water ,sending water flying everywhere.

They had silver like buttons with wolf heads on them, Donavan feared for the worse, he wondered if this could be the man beasts that the Gypsies warned of. He was back in stance the one in the deep end was now on all fours ready to charge and Donavan had the stick at his waste one hand out in front slightly higher than the one that was behind, waiting to see who was going to attack first. The one that attacked first was now creeping about and the seemed to grunt something to each other that was not tangible to Donavan that was the plan of attack. The first shot out like a rocket on tracks, as soon as he was in range Donavan stepped forward with his right leg and flipped the stick up to meet the first charger in the temple; as he stepped back with his right foot placing in back into the original potion he brought the hand that was in front under the stich using it to glide it back and behind his head this time, as soon as it was in place he stepped forward and wiped it out and around his head nailing the second one in the mouth and quickly again used the free hand to guide the stick, back in place where he stood looking at them with a daring face.

Adela could not believe her eyes, he was a master with the stick, this was some kind of fighting that she had never witnessed before. She was noticing that the men seemed to be German, but no words to really tell where they were from. They were way larger than her man, but he seemed to handle them with grace. She felt guilty for hiding there like the normal girl, but she did realize he needed his concentration.

Again and again they charged him and time and time again he would put them down. It was obvious that Donavan was wearing out, but these two seemed to be healing on the spot, they only seemed wetter and a bit more dirty as time went on. Donavan seemed to move very little, very calculative and thought out, he was like a tiger waiting for two lions to pounce on him, slapping each one down every time they struck out. This time his luck ran out, the one swipe at his stick snapping it into bits and grabbed him by the throat, ripped him off of his feet and sent him crashing down onto the rock of which he was standing upon. By some blessing of God this beast seemed to fly away from him and land about fifteen feet away, smashing and crashing into the bushes. Bernandas stood there with his hand reached down and asked Donavan, “Are you going to lay on your duff all day or what boy?” Donavan took his hand and snapped up to his feet.

“Listen, I don’t know you, but there is something different about these guys.”

“Trust me, I already know, boy. I saw how you were hitting them and they seem to just heal.” Bernandas looks around, “Now would be the time to look for another stick boy.

Bernandas was larger than the two attackers, but he wasn’t sure what they were by what he had witnessed a few moments before. The beast that he had flung through the air growled and it seemed as if his bone structure had changed a bit, and his muscle mass seemed to increase. After glaring down Bernandas he charged him and leapt through the air grabbing and impaling Bernandas through the air and down into the water. Bernandas and the ghastly man were beating on each other, picking each other up and slamming each other down, up against trees and at times trying to drown each other as Donavan was handling the second one, but this time it was not going as smooth, it was as if both of these strange men had gained strength and speed. Donavan was wondering if these men were even human with the beating they were taking and not even having any signs of wounds within moments, healing right in front of their eyes.

Adela was terrified, what was going on? She could not believe as Bernandas had slammed one through and old rotten tree and repeatedly bounced his head off of the ground to see the man, smaller than Bernandas, being used as a battering ram and a hammering tool into rock, stone, and the cold ground, standing up as if nothing had happened and attacking again. She was seeing one of the most powerful men she knew not even effecting these creatures, for there is no way they could be human.

Both Donavan and Bernandas were starting to show wear and tear from the battle, at the end of their wits and resolve and patience, they wondered how much longer they could both hold out. Donavan was using the new stick he had found and was holding of the beast with it, but dealing with the one now was way harder than dealing with the two of them earlier. Donavan was winded and Bernandas was starting to suffer a lot of trauma from the ongoing battle of blasting the man beast through trees, into everything he could find and receiving injuries along the way as the man magically just healed as if nothing ever happened. Somehow Donavan and Bernandas ended up back to back heaving for air and both shaking their heads trying to decide what to do. Out of nowhere came a howl and both men without looking at each other, turned and fled in the direction of the sound.

“Adela! Come on out, let’s get you and your little man home before they get back.”
