Narah Night comes from the firstborn of the werewolves lines; the once alpha of their species. But now, the Hollow wolves hide in fear as they are hunted and their souls harvested for power.
Most of her kind have either been slaughtered, kidnapped, or hide in fear.
Narah refuses to hide in the shadows and has made some unlikely friends with a dark fairy, reaper, and another Hollow Wolf. However, Narah’s new friends don’t come without complications. The Reapers are thrown from one power shift to another, leaving Kyrell with control over his people. All as the Dark Fairies are reminded that not all prophecies are as they seem, leaving Foley to take reign over her kind.
As Narah finds herself front and center, not only before her people, but all those who stand against this war for absolute power, she must decide whether to continue the Night Family Legacy or forge her own path.
As their new lives are pieced together and the four friends become ready to face this war, they realize that, though fate has brought them together, its twist and turns aren’t going to make it easy for them to remain that way.

Excerpt from Hunted:

Prologue
The Hallow Wolves once reigned over the six werewolf packs. We did not reign with unjust, nor did we consider ourselves better than any of the rest. It was just the natural order, The Hallow Wolves, then the Cresent, Crimson, Golden, Shadow, and Mystic. It was the order each line was created, and for hundreds of years it was how we lived.
My mother was our Alpha, as the Night’s had always been. I was a Night, there was no mistaken it. I looked just like my mother, firey red hair, olive skin, a face covered in freckles. My mother was my everything, we spent every minute together, even though I had five other brothers and sisters, it was I who she chose to become leader of the pack when her time had run out.
At that time I didn’t think anything of it, it was something that was going to happen years from now, or so I thought. I also didn’t have time to think about it, as every waking second of my days were filled with training, and learning, and getting every experience my mother thought I needed. School was one of those experiences, a school away from our pack, a school that included all kids from all kinds of supernatural backgrounds.
Hallow Point, a school founded by my great grandparents, was where I was when I got the news…the worst news of my life. The Hallow wolves were under attack, and my family…our pack…they were gone

Title: The Cringle Cove Christmas Chronicles
Genre: Holiday Romance
Publication Date: November 29th, 2018

Blurb:
Another winter means Christmas in Cringle Cove, the cozy resort town nestled in the mountains of Pennsylvania. My home.
It was never my dream to run my aunt’s bed and breakfast, but it’s my reality. The only good thing about this time of year is that we shut down the bed and breakfast to celebrate our family’s Christmas.
The town twinkles with the festive lights as the snow falls in a glistening blanket on the land. The cheer is in the air, and I find myself embracing the holiday spirit. Not even the stack of bills that keep piling up can ruin the joyful cheer.
That is until I collide into Roan McDaniels in the local coffee shop. The searing liquid that spills down my arm, is nothing compared to the ache in my heart.
He’s back in town. The man who broke my heart so many years ago and he looks good. Damn good.
Little did I know I was in for a very unexpected gift.

For someone who loves everything about the holidays, mine are sure getting off to a terrible start.
The worst part? I promised my ex I wouldn’t tell a soul we’d ended things until we’re far away from Cringle Cove.
At least I’m in the most festive town in the country.
If everything else goes to hell this week, I’ve got that.
I’m hiding out in a coffee shop when I see Abby.
She’s awkward, sarcastic, and obviously miserable here.
I’ve never wanted anyone more.
Keep a promise to your ex in exchange for a happy holiday?

It’s Christmas in Cringle Cove. Somebody save me.
This place makes me crazy with all the decorations. But one thing makes being here even worse: my ex-boyfriend. In fact, he makes me regret ever leaving the house.
One wrong step and I fall—hard. Who’s there to save me? None other than Max. Seeing him again brings back so many memories. One, in particular, brings tears to my eyes—the day I ended us.
He’s all I think about. All I see. And he wants me back.
However, returning to Max means choosing a road I never thought I’d take again.

I always know when Shaine’s home on break from college. Every part of my being goes on high alert the second she enters Cringle Cove. She was once mine, but not anymore.
That is until I find her on the ground in pain. Ice happens.
With her suddenly near, I have to fight the constant urge to wrap my arms around her and kiss her. We aren’t the same people we used to be.
We have a lot to work through. Hearts to mend. If Shaine is my Christmas gift, it’ll be worth all the pain.
This will be one long week.

Characters and Music

Characters and Music

I was in a restaurant a few weeks ago, and as in many restaurants, they had the radio playing.  And a song came on that I’d heard before, but for whatever reason I had never really paid close attention to the lyrics.  Listening to them, it struck me how they applied perfectly to one of my characters – Sara, the heroine of the Dream Doctor Mysteries.  Which got me to thinking about “theme songs” for my other characters.  Not necessarily songs the characters themselves would listen to, but songs that define them, songs that might be part of the soundtrack of a hypothetical movie of their books.

For Sara, that song was “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen:

Why?  Well, for these lines:

Hey, I just met you and this is crazy
But here’s my number, so call me maybe
It’s hard to look right at you baby
But here’s my number, so call me maybe

That’s pretty much Sara’s exact reaction when she first meets Brian, in chapter two of Dream Student.  Sara herself would be horrified at this choice of songs for her, but she wouldn’t argue about how she felt, or how things ultimately worked out for her.

For Jane Barnaby, heroine of the Jane Barnaby Adventures, there’s a really obvious choice, and Jane would totally agree with it.  Especially because it’s an 80’s song and Jane would have listened to it as a teenager (the books take place in the early 1990’s, when Jane’s in her 20’s).  It’s “Jane’s Getting Serious” by Jon Astley:

Besides the song being about a Jane, and besides the crazy 80’s hair (which Jane also would be very familiar with), the lyrics definitely suggest someone who finds herself in some touchy situations, and drags her friends along with her:

So I’m pretending I’m not
Caught in between
The devil and the deep blue sea
And I cannot believe
That I would ever admit
That I could take Jane seriously

I haven’t figured out what the theme songs are for the cast of Mr. Smith and the Roach, except for Hilary Jackson, Mr. Smith’s longtime friend, owner of his favorite bar, and a retired Mafia hitwoman.  This one’s kind of obvious, especially since her mob days took place thirty years ago, in the 1980’s.  “Twilight Zone” by Golden Earring:

She can definitely relate to this:

Well the night weighs heavy on his guilty mind
This far from the borderline
When the hitman comes
He knows damn well he has been cheated

I’ll follow this up with more character theme songs as I discover what they are…

Cassidy’s
Touch by Paris Brandon

Book
1 in the Cassidy’s Touch series
Her gift is a double edged sword.
Will it be enough to save a cursed bootlegger from becoming a demon’s prize?
The least of reality
show host Cassidy Spencer’s worries is banishing the ghost of a handsome
bootlegger who disappeared after being accused of murdering his best friend’s
fiancée. According to an expert, her ghost isn’t a ghost and if she doesn’t use
her psychometric ability to find his body before the witch who cursed him does,
he could end up enslaved by a demon for eternity.
Chance Coraggio doesn’t
remember anything before he could walk through walls and that includes the
crazy woman telling him he’s been asleep for nearly a century. The life he
should’ve lived has been stolen. All the people he has ever loved are dead—and
it turns out the crazy woman isn’t as crazy as he’d hoped.
But waking Chance is
only half the battle. Now, both are bound by blood to a demon’s curse. To break
free, they must find out who is coming for them and why. Because the only
reason for a sleeping curse that has lasted almost a century lies somewhere in
a past that Chance can’t remember.

Breathe
in. Breathe out. Imagine the audience naked. Her agent’s advice had never
failed her. The studio lights came up and Cassidy Spencer pasted a smile on her
face that lasted through her first two readings, a man wanting to know if the
antique baseball card collection he’d found had belonged to his father, and two
estranged sisters fighting over ownership of their grandmother’s silver tea
service.
Thankfully, one touch was all she’d
needed to see that granny had been the last to handle the teapot, and she’d
wanted the set to go to a distant niece. The cards had been a bit more
difficult. There had been decades of owners and handlers to sift through before
she’d gotten to the man who’d sold his prize possession to pay his son’s
medical bills.
Unfortunately, the emotional signatures
of anyone who had handled the objects possessed a corresponding energy that
added to what she’d been absorbing after dealing with the shooting schedule of
her Chicago-based reality series, “Cassidy’s Touch”, for the past two weeks.
Her hands shook with the effort to control the static current that was starting
to make her head pound.
One more reading and she was finished
until her new contract was negotiated.
She took a deep breath and brushed her
fingertips over the two-carat, marquise cut, blue-white diamond engagement ring
nestled in the carefully crafted folds of midnight-dark velvet. Displayed on
the low, satin-draped table separating her from her final guest, the sparkling
gem drew appreciative gasps from the audience as the studio lights brightened.
A close-up was provided, via a screen only they could see.
The last bit of stagecraft gave her a
few moments to puzzle over her final guest. She’d been trying to place him
since he’d walked onto the set a few minutes ago and sat down on the couch
opposite her.
To heighten audience anticipation,
nothing about the last guest was ever revealed; not their name, occupation or
reason they wanted an object read. Tonight’s guest had his own edge-of-his-seat
anticipation going on, but his identity eluded her.
Dressed in black from his turtleneck
and leather jacket to his loafers; his teeth were bared in a rigid smile that
was as fake as his spray-on tan. She gave him points for not coloring his gray
crew cut, but who wore a leather jacket during a July heat wave?
Her fingers tingled when the warm, gold
band revealed the image of the man seated across from her. No surprise there.
He appeared to have an emotional investment that was making him uneasy, but she
didn’t need to be psychic to guess whatever information he was seeking lay
deeper.
She closed her eyes and slid her
fingers over the jewel that warmed with the heat of her hand as she rolled and
pressed. Cradling the ring in her palm, she curled her fingers, and waited for
an image to unfold.
It came in a blur that sharpened
slowly. Santa Claus decked out in camouflage and wearing a jeweler’s loupe
would have made her smile except for the trepidation that colored his greed.
Her instincts were screaming the moment before the image faded. A violent jolt
burned its way up her arm and sizzled at the base of her skull. Exploded in a
flash of light that was there one second and gone the next as the scene
unfolded.
The ring’s owner had still been alive
and screaming, panicking because she couldn’t remove it fast enough. The
middle-aged blonde woman had tried to jerk her plump hand away because she’d
known the instant her assailant had decided his knife was the solution.
The man who’d cut off her finger was
tall and skinny. The detailed tattoo of a snake slithered across the back of
his right hand, its forked tongue curling around his gnarled forefinger. The
ring hadn’t gone over the first joint, but he’d placed it there to admire
before dropping his bloody treasure into a small, dark bag.
He turned as if just remembering his
hysterical victim and proceeded, without hesitation to stab her over and over,
counting each wound as if he’d been meeting a quota.
Cassidy blinked and struggled to open
her fist before the energy from the savage encounter melded it shut. Her
stomach heaved, and her hands began to shake. She dropped the ring back into
its midnight-dark velvet nest before the fingers of her right hand curled until
they formed a cramped fist, nails biting into her palm.
The woman’s terrified screams were
still ringing in her ears when she finally looked up—and remembered why her
guest seemed familiar. Jacob Atwell, the attorney for Brent Collier, the
murdered woman’s husband. The high-profile case had sparked a media frenzy
several months ago, along with most, but apparently not all of the grisly
details of her murder.

Mr. Smith and the Roach – the TV Show!

Mr. Smith and the Roach – the TV Show!

Last Monday, I introduced you to the actors who I envision as the “cast” for Mr. Smith and the Roach, since it began life as a joke about a fake TV show on a friend’s podcast.  I also mentioned that my fake online guide to the fake show disappeared when my website crashed a few years back.  Well, a couple of pages survived, courtesy of the World Wide Web Archive.  In particular, one of the episode pages is still viewable, and I present it to you below, so you can see (1) how much of a total geek I am, and (2) how much of that fake TV show made it into the book, once you’ve got the book to compare it to, in two weeks.  So without further ado, with some notes for context and comparison to the novel:

“The Courtship of Jeannie’s Uncle”

Synopsis

Abigail returns, this time to play matchmaker. First, she sets up her brother with a journalist friend; then she arranges a date for Jeannie with a former worker on their farm who now lives in New York. Meanwhile, Big Eddie Sluntkin makes advances towards Jeannie, Hilary Jackson shows jealousy over Mr. Smith, the Roach has a long talk with Big Eddie, and Dr. Brooks has a crisis of confidence.

(J.J.’s note – the episode title was too good to pass up, and it appears as a chapter title in the novel.  And the plot of Abigail setting up Mr. Smith on a date with a journalist friend survived into the book as well)

Guest Characters/Cast

Hilary Jackson (Kathleen Turner)

Edward “Big Eddie” Sluntkin (Danny DeVito)

Abigail Jeanne Marie Smith Frankenhurst Blakesley Morissey (Deidre Hall)

Sara Smith (Elizabeth Sladen) – An English investigative reporter who Abigail tries to set up with Mr. Smith

(J.J.’s note – Sadly, Elizabeth Sladen passed away in 2011.  So in the book, Sara Smith becomes Alexandra Smith, and she’s now “played” by actress Danielle Nicolet)

David Clair (Peter Krause) – A former worker on the Smith family farm in Iowa, now working for an ad agency in Manhattan; Abigail tries to set him up with Jeannie.

Detailed Plot

(J.J.’s note – I never got around to writing this up.  Sorry!)

Production Notes and Trivia

Peter Krause and Lauren Ambrose played brother and sister on HBO’s “Six Feet Under”

(J.J.’s note – Lauren Ambrose was my choice to play Jeannie back in 2007)

Elizabeth Sladen appeared on “Doctor Who” for several years as investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith; the episode leaves it unclear whether Sara Smith is intended to be the same character or not.

The scene in which Mr. Smith and Jeannie sing “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” (from “Fiddler on the Roof”) was ad-libbed; during a break from filming, Lauren Ambrose began singing, Michael Ironside joined in, and the producers liked it so much that a new scene was quickly improvised and shot.

Unanswered Questions/Unresolved Plots

Who did Dr. Brooks call after his breakdown?

(J.J.’s note – this didn’t make it into the novel.  Dr. Brooks has a smaller role than he did in my vision of the TV show, but he’ll have more to do in the second book of the series)

Was Sara Smith actually interested in Mr. Smith, or was she just pursuing the pension fund story? Was the pension fund explanation just a cover for her pursuit of another story entirely?

What was the Roach looking for in the building’s recycling bins? What is in the protected file on his laptop?

Memorable Quotes

Jeannie: My mom’s coming.

Mr. Smith: Is she bringing War, Famine and Death with her this time, or did she leave them at home?

(J.J.’s note – this quote and several others made it into the book)

Abigail: Sara Smith. You’ll like her. And she wouldn’t even need to change her name if you marry her.

Mr. Smith: Yes, that’s a wonderful basis for a long-term relationship.

Big Eddie: One date! What do you have to lose?

Jeannie: My dignity, my sanity, probably my wallet.

Sara: Your sister is very interesting.

Mr. Smith: So is nuclear war, but you wouldn’t want to be around when that happens, either.

David: That’s the strangest thing I’ve ever felt. It was just like…

Jeannie: If you say “kissing your sister,” I swear to God I’ll kill you.

Dr. Brooks: I don’t think I can deal with this.

Hilary: Well, you’ve come to the right place. I’d recommend the Sonoma Hills Sauvignon Blanc ’03. It’s a great “drink until you forget your own name” sort of wine. Third bottle’s on the house, if you’re still conscious by then.

We shouldn’t have taken the risk. We should’ve stayed just friends. Best friends. But only friends. But our hearts were foolish. I’d loved him forever. So, three years ago when he offered what I always longed for, I grabbed it with both hands. But I couldn’t hold on tight enough. The beauty of love blinded me. I didn’t see it coming. Didn’t expect to lose everything. My friend. My heart. My art. My privacy. All of them casualties of love lost.
Dawson ~
Every beat of my heart sang her name. She was my muse. Without her, there’d be no music. I was riding the high of fame and fortune. I had it all—status, money, her. Until the thing I’d always wanted cost me the thing I’d always needed. Love’s song drowned out all the warnings. Now she was gone. So was the music. So was my will. I was left with only silence.
What happens when two hearts sharing one beat fall out of sync?

My fingers traced his face, reacquainting themselves with every breathtaking feature—the prickly scruff along his jaw adding a depth to his face, high chiseled cheekbones, perfect Roman nose, long sweeping lashes, whiskey-colored orbs, plump lips that quivered beneath my touch, deep dimple in one cheek, lush dark hair peeking from the edge of his beanie.
His eyes and fingers were making the same journey across my face—no doubt spinning lyrics in his mind as he went. “God, I’ve missed your face,” he breathed against my skin.
“Shut up and kiss me,” I rasped.

Wrapping his hand around the back of my neck, his fingers threaded through my hair as he pressed my mouth to his. The instant our lips collided the emptiness inside my chest filled up. His free hand gripped my hip and nudged me closer. Recklessly, I threw one leg across his lap, so that I straddled him. Pressure at the small of my back urged me closer to him. Oblivious to our surroundings, I poured every ounce of love, longing and desperation into the kiss. Words had never been my strong suit, but hopefully my body language spoke volumes.

Satisfied that I wasn’t planning to divorce my mouth from his any time soon, Dawson let go of my head. He tugged on the hem of my shirt where it was pinned between us. I shifted slightly, freeing the fabric without tearing my lips from his. Calloused fingers ghosted up my side leaving gooseflesh to rise in their wake.

She’s racing to save the ranch
He’s struggling to win her heart . . . again
Brylee Barton has just one goal in mind: win the barrel racing world championship. Not for the glory, but for the attached cash prize that could save her family’s ranch. When an injury leaves her at the mercy of the very same copper-headed, silver-tongued cowboy she once vowed to loathe forever, she has no choice but to swallow her pride and accept his help.
Fun-loving, easy-going Shaun Price has a million dollar smile, more charm than he can channel, and a string of ex-girlfriends rumored to have started their own support group. When the one woman he’s never quite managed to get out of his head or heart needs his assistance, he jumps at the chance to help. Little does he realize how challenging it will be to keep from falling for her all over again.
With the holiday season fast approaching, will Shaun and Brylee discover the gift of forgiveness, and experience their own happily-ever-after?
This sweet Christmas romance warms the heart, lifts the spirit, and touches the soul with its message of forgiveness, hope, and redemption. Don’t miss it!
USA Today Bestselling Author Shanna Hatfield writes character-driven romances with relatable heroes and heroines. Her historical westerns have been described as “reminiscent of the era captured by Bonanza and The Virginian” while her contemporary works have been called “laugh-out-loud funny, and a little heart-pumping sexy without being explicit in any way.”
Convinced everyone deserves a happy ending, this hopeless romantic is out to make it happen one story at a time. When she isn’t writing or indulging in chocolate (dark and decadent, please), Shanna hangs out with her husband, lovingly known as Captain Cavedweller.
Shanna is a member of Western Writers of America, Women Writing the West, Romance Writers of America, Sweet Romance Reads, Cowboy Kisses, and Pioneer Hearts.

Brylee opened her eyes and tipped her head back, watching as the pickup men rode into the arena. One went to catch Rocket while the other hastened her direction. The announcer and the clown told a joke as the medical team hustled toward her as fast as they could make it through the mud.
Frustration battled with anger as the pickup man approached. The last person on earth she wanted to see was that man.
“Maybe today would be a good day to die,” she muttered as she tried again to move her foot from beneath the fence. If she freed it before he reached her, she could crawl over the fence and make her way back to her trailer without speaking to him.
Why couldn’t he have gone on ignoring her like he had the last five and half years? Why tonight, of all nights, was he going to force her to acknowledge him? Didn’t she have enough to deal with, like missing her opportunity to claim the winning title? Or the undeniable fact she looked like a half-drowned kitten that had been dragged through a pig wallow?
She thought of her wasted entry fee. Not to mention the hours it would take to get all the mud scrubbed off Rocket and her tack.
Wasn’t a no-score enough punishment without being forced to face the most arrogant, self-centered, childish man she’d ever known?
Trapped on her back in the mud, it seeped through her clothes, chilling her and making her fight the need to shiver. She questioned how she could exit the arena with even a shred of dignity when her pants oozed soupy mud like a toddler’s soggy diaper.
The slap of boots hitting the mud in the arena drew her gaze upward. A handsome face appeared above her as the pickup man leaned over her. Gray-blue eyes twinkled behind thick lashes and a smile full of even, white teeth gleamed in the arena lights. Shaun Price braced his gloved hands on his thighs and offered her an infuriatingly cocky grin.
Why couldn’t she have at least passed out and awakened far away from the infuriating, irritating, Adonis-like cowboy?
“Well, Bitsy, I see you’re still racing Christmas,” he said, his voice sounding as deep and rich as she remembered.
Brylee glowered at him. “You know I hate that name.”
“Yep, I sure do.” Shaun chuckled and stepped back as the medics surrounded her.

Running.
It’s what I do. What I’ve always done.
For fitness. For fun.
And now for fear.
He took me. Trapped me. Destroyed me.
Broke me down, little by little.
His captive.
His slave.
His pet.
But…something unleashes.
Something forbidden. The passion. The pleasure.
It’s wrong. Unforgiving, and I should do what I do.
Run like Hell.

I didn’t even realise that I had reached for him, until Hendrix flinched at my touch. “Sorry.”
“It’s okay.” He shook his head.
“Do you want me to stop?” I asked as I touched the small round cigarette burns.
“No.”
There were hundreds of them, dotting his. I traced my fingers over each one, feeling his pain. My heart clenched.
Hendrix’s breathing increased and I wondered if I was pushing him too far, but he still didn’t stop me.
My hand drifted down to a large triangular scar on his lower back. I traced the slightly curved edges and winced in pain as I thought about what could have caused such a bad scar.
“What did he do to you?” I whispered so soft I wasn’t sure Hendrix heard.
“Hot iron. My shirt was wrinkled and I looked like a slob.”
“Oh, Hendrix.”
“I was eleven.”
If it were possible for my heart to break any more, it did, right then.
Shattered.
Tears rolled down my cheeks as images of an eleven-year-old Hendrix being held down by Ray flashed through my mind.
“I’m so sorry,” I whispered into his back, wrapping my arms around his waist until they came to rest on his stomach. His hands found mine, covering them completely. His body trembled, and I had no idea how to comfort him. How to take away the pain, torment, torture.
I pressed my lips to a scar on his shoulder and he tensed, tightened his fingers around mine. I wanted to make him feel better, make him forget the pain of his past for just a little while.
Throwing caution to the wind, I turned him to face me.
“Lucy.” His voice was low, gravelly. “Stop.”
“No.” I cupped his cheek with my hand and pressed my lips together in a small smile. “Kiss me.”
He froze. Conflict warred in his eyes as he lowered his gaze and dragged it leisurely over my body.
I just wanted a moment for us to both forget. For Hendrix to lose himself in me and forget his past. I wanted to forget where I was, forget that my life was hell. I wanted to feel something other than hatred, and Hendrix’s kisses and fingers on my skin always sparked something in me; a fire, a desire that I constantly had to extinguish. But right then, maybe it was the fact he was trying so hard to be noble and do the right thing, I just wanted to give into the flames and burn with him.
As if following my train of thought, Hendrix’s eyes flashed to life, a low growl erupted from his throat and he slammed his mouth down on mine. My hands were in his hair, my lips moulded to his, a small whimper escaped. And I really didn’t know if it was me or him. Or if it was out of pleasure, comfort, or fear. It didn’t matter. It just was.
His hands cupped my face as he stepped back. Breathing hard, he closed his eyes and rested his forehead against mine. “Can I tell you something?” he whispered against my lips.
“Yes.”
“I’m scared, Lucy. I’m scared I can’t fix this.” His voice was full of pain, anguish.
“Me too.” I pressed myself closer to him, needing the comfort and needing to comfort him.
“I won’t let him touch you, Lucy. At all. He’ll have to kill me first, okay? I promise you, you will be safe.”
I kissed him again.
Gave in to the flames
