Title: Solomon’s Surrender
Author: Michelle Dare
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance
Cover Designer: Regina Wamba at Mae I Design
Publication Date: October 11th, 2019
Blurb:
Cocky. No word better described Solomon. He projected the playboy image, but only he knew the truth. Deep inside, he wanted what his brother and friends had—a mate.
Fifteen hundred years was a long time to be alone. Solomon’s pure vampire bloodline and family name made him desirable, but that didn’t take away the loneliness.
Lilah was fiercely independent and distrusting of paranormals out of necessity. Some treated her with contempt because of her half cheetah shifter/half fae heritage. They thought she was beneath them when she was actually superior.
Someone was determined to take Lilah’s life, but who was behind the attacks remained a mystery. Solomon fought off the first assault then became Lilah’s sole protector until he uncovered who wanted to harm her.
One wanted a mate, and the other didn’t. But fate didn’t ask for their opinion. They could only fight what was meant to be for so long before the inevitable happened. If they managed to stay alive, maybe they would learn what it meant to be fated.

Blessings of Love – Book 6 – “Backward Blessings” by Rachel A. Anderson

Blessings of Love – Book 6 – “Backward Blessings” by Rachel A. Anderson

Today’s the release date for the final book of the amazing BLESSINGS OF LOVE sweet romance novella series (my book is out this Friday).  Today, it’s BACKWARDS BLESSINGS, by Rachel A. Anderson.

First, a little about Rachael

One of Rachel Andersen’s favorite memories in college was when a music theory professor turned one of her exams back to her. With a twinkle in his eye, he said, “I can always tell that it’s your paper because you have a story written on the back.” She was just killing time after the ear training and aural skills portions of the test (where he played notes, and the students were to write down the interval or melody), but it hinted at a larger love. She loves stories. She loves reading them, she loves hearing them, she loves telling them, and she loves living them!

Growing up as the oldest of nine children, she used stories to make mundane (and sometimes disgusting) tasks fly by like when she quoted Disney movies for her youngest siblings while she changed diapers or got them dressed. Though the youngest sibling is a senior in high school, the quotes she pulled out of thin air are used as family jokes that rock the house with laughter.

Stories propelled her through difficult days in college. They sustained her through the stress of student teaching. They were her favorite time of day in elementary and early childhood classrooms.

Her only hope is that these stories bring you as much joy and pleasure as they bring her!

You can follow Rachel at her website, on Facebook and on her Amazon Author Page.

And now for the book!

Jake Littlefield hates Thanksgiving. So, naturally, his sister abandons him to spend the holiday in Blessings where the town starts celebrating a week early. The only thing keeping him from hopping onto the next plane to Miami is the promise his sister makes to leave his love life alone for a year if he’ll endure a week-long stay in Blessings. At least, that’s what he’s telling himself…

Teresa Rampton’s marriage and subsequent divorce has left her a little gun-shy in the romance department. Content to wrap her world around her young son Logan, she’s unprepared when her new guest comes in for a landing.

Now, if he’d just ask her to the Harvest Ball, things might go smoothly with the mysterious pilot taking control of her Thanksgiving.

You can buy it on Amazon RIGHT NOW!

Last, but certainly not least, we’ve got a great interview with Rachel!

Who is your favorite author?

That’s such a tough question! The author I pick up almost without question is Rick Riordan though that may be more because I fell in love with his first characters and they’ve been woven into almost every series he’s written in one way or another.

How do you describe your writing style?

My writing style is sensitive to the delicate nature of relationships and emotions. I enjoy peeling back the curtain in the lives of men and women who face difficult challenges and come off conqueror in the hopes of inspiring readers to try to do the same.

Why should we read your books?

My books bring humor and compassion to relatable experiences. Though they are geared toward adults, they are safe enough that children and teens could read them without the questionable material to which they are so often exposed. While not overtly Christian, there are themes of redemption and healing in each of her stories.

Have any of your characters been modelled after yourself?

All of my characters have a piece of me in them. Teresa Rampton is probably the most like me. Though I’ve never been married, I know the walls she’s erected to protect herself intimately. Like her, I’m a good cook and a decent homemaker though I can come across intimidating and cold from time to time. I’m learning how to be a better advocate for myself and others as well, and I have a wonderful support network of people like Jake who help me learn how to do that for myself instead of trying to do that for me.

If you could exchange lives with any of your characters for a day which character would you choose and why?

Ooh! Interesting! I’ve always wanted to run a bed and breakfast, so I would probably switch places for Teresa for a day–especially if I could go to the Harvest Blessings festival with Logan! That kid cracks me up!

What books have most influenced your life?

While I was writing Backward Blessings, I got a book-craving for Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles. Reading Cinder and Scarlet helped me develop more vibrant descriptions which made it easier to finish the project. So, those books helped me most recently. C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia series opened a new world of literary possibilities to me, followed closely by J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Both series helped me to embrace my own quirks and trust that they would become strengths which could shape the world.

If you could select one book that you could rewrite and add your own unique twist on, which book would that be and why?

I’ve had a desire to retell the Rapunzel fairy tale lately. I’ve always had a special place in my heart for the moment of reunion with the prince where Rapunzel nurses him back to health after he’s blinded by the witch. At least one version of the fairy tale implied that Rapunzel and the prince had twins somewhere along the way, and I’d love to dig myself into some research. I’d love to peel back some of the emotion behind a reunion where the prince also discovered he was a father (or at least met his children) for the first time.

Beatles or Monkees? Why?

Ooh! Monkees because “I’m a Believer” is the anthem of romance authors everywhere!

Who should play you in a film of your life?

The only thing I know for sure is that whoever plays me has to have a ton of curly hair!

Blessings of Love – Book 5 – “Twice Blessed” by J.J. DiBenedetto

Today’s the release date for my book in the excellent BLESSINGS OF LOVE sweet romance novella series!  It’s called TWICE BLESSED

First, a little about me, in case you’re new here…

J.J. DiBenedetto is the author of the Dream Series.  He lives in Arlington, Virginia with his lovely wife and Danny, a white cat who’s trained them both.  He’s originally from Yonkers, New York.  He loves the New York Giants, fondue, photography, travel, the opera and he’s a huge science-fiction and fantasy geek.

And now for the book!

Allison is a widow who’s been raising her daughter alone for the last four years. Mike is a teacher who’s new to the town of Blessings. They only have one thing in common: Lucy – Allison’s daughter, Mike’s student, and a nine-year-old who’s watched “The Parent Trap” way too often.

Both Allison and Mike are onto Lucy’s scheme to play matchmaker, but will they fall for each other anyway?

You can buy it on Amazon RIGHT NOW!

As an interesting aside (well, interesting to me, anyway!), I cast all my books with movie or TV actors, and TWICE BLESSED is no exception.  For Allison, I picture Jill Wagner (star of several Hallmark Channel romances, and also a new Hallmark Mystery series, “Mystery 101”.  And for Mike, it’s Dylan Bruce, who’s also a Hallmark Channel veteran (he’s the star of one of my favorites, “A Novel Romance” alongside Amy Acker).

Last, but certainly not least, here’s an interview with me…

Who is your favorite author?

It’s so hard to pick just one.  I’d probably go with Alastair Reynolds right now – I love his writing style, and I’m a huge sci-fi fan, so it’s hard to go wrong with him.

How do you describe your writing style?

Conversational and engaging, with a lot of humor, for the most part.

Use no more than two sentences. Why should we read your books?

Because they’ve got a little bit of everything: romance, mystery, humor and plenty of emotion.  and because there’s always a twist to them, to keep you guessing a little bit!

Have any of your characters been modeled after yourself?

I created them all, so I have to say there’s at least a little piece of me in most of them.  But there’s nobody directly modeled after myself in any of my books (thankfully!)

If you could exchange lives with any of your characters for a day which character would you choose and why?

I’d have to pick Sam, the title character of my mystery, Mr. Smith and the Roach.  It’d be really interesting to live his life for one day!

What books have most influenced your life?

Too many to count!  But I can tell you the one book that directly led to my writing and publishing my books: Transpecial by Jennifer R. Povey.  Jenna’s a friend, and when she sold that novel to a publisher, it really made me sit up and think, “why can’t I do it, too?”  So I did (it’s also a really good book, so check it out!).

If you could select one book that you could rewrite and add your own unique twist on, which book would that be and why?

I could pick a lot of books here.  But one that always really frustrated me was the Galactic Milieu  by Julian May.  The books are good, and I enjoyed them.  But she changed the ending because a lot of readers figured out one of the big twists and talked about it on the Internet (this was back in the old Usenet days).  I’d go and put back the original ending, if it were up to me.

Beatles or Monkees? Why?

Monkees!  I loved them as a kid (still do).  I remember very clearly that a Monkees album (yes, a record album, one of those big black discs that you put on a turntable!) was the very last Christmas gift I ever got that was from Santa Claus himself (at least, that’s what the tag on the gift said!).

Who should play you in a film of your life?

Well, it wouldn’t be the most exciting movie ever.  But how about Jack Black?  He’s a good match physically, and he can do socially awkward really well.

Author Spotlight – Roxanne Bland and “The Underground”

Author Spotlight – Roxanne Bland and “The Underground”

I’ve got a great new author for you to meet this morning.  Say hello to Roxanne Bland!

If I had to describe myself in three words, I would say I’m a “fugitive from reality.” I’ve always been drawn to the dark, the fantastic, and the just plain weird. As a child growing up in Washington, D.C., I was forever on the lookout for ways to divorce myself from the dreariness of living in a world where there were no dragons to play with. Lucky for me, there were many–and legal–ways to escape the banality, like reading (of course), imagining stories, listening to or playing music, and one of my favorites, wandering through the many museums that make up the Smithsonian Institution.

Little has changed since I was a child–I escape reality every chance I get. No more wandering through the Smithsonian, though–too many tourists these days. Now I use the pen–or pixels, as it were. My stories cross several genres–science fiction, fantasy, romance, sometimes a little horror–all rolled up into one book. One term for what I do is “mashup,” which I like because it sounds so edgy. As for how I came to write mashup, it was simply that when I began writing in earnest, I had only the vaguest notion of what genre meant. At that time, bookstores grouped science fiction and fantasy on the same shelf, and labeled the collection “sci-fi/fantasy.” Naturally, I thought sci-fi/fantasy was a single genre and was surprised to learn they were not. I was also told that science fiction and fantasy did not, could not, and would not, ever mix. That surprised me too–since I’d already done it.

All these years later, I’m still hooked on writing mashup. Mashups are the kind of books I like to read. I’ve read tons of fantasy, science fiction, horror, romance–and as the decades rolled by, I found I had become bored. There was a kind of sameness about them–the characters were different and the situations were usually different, but I suppose what I wanted was a monkey wrench thrown into the mix. Something new to wrap my head around, make me sit up and pay attention. Like a rollicking, adventurous romance between a werewolf and a space alien.

Writing mashup is immensely freeing because I’m not bound by the restrictions that define genre. And amazing things can happen when one colors outside the lines. For me, this is what makes the joy and despair of writing so worthwhile. So buckle up and join me on that trip across the fragile boundary into the wild, woolly, and weirdly fantastic. You won’t regret it. In fact, you may not want to come back.

Living In The Underground

“This is the weirdest book I’ve ever read.”

That’s what a reviewer said about my paranormal urban fantasy/romance/science fiction hybrid The Underground. What a fabulous compliment! I wasn’t going for weird when I wrote the story but that’s the way my mind works so I’m happy to know my weirdness shone through. Still, I wonder what it was about the novel she found strange. Could it be The Underground is the story of an alpha werewolf and an interstellar assassin who fall for each other? Hm…maybe it was the sex. It’s not every day one snags a ringside seat at the Bedroom Olympics where one of the partners is an eight-foot wolf.

I’ve been asked several times about The Underground’s world, and what went into building it. Long before the story took shape in my head, it started with a simple question: What would it take for a werewolf to survive in the real world?

I thought through various rural and urban scenarios, the problems they present and how a werewolf might successfully overcome them. While thinking through a complication, it struck me that a werewolf trying to lead as normal a life as possible in his world wouldn’t be that much different from anyone trying to lead a life in our world where they are marginalized and hunted by those in power. People die every day because of skin color, sexual orientation and identity, belief systems, and whatever else the human tribes, being the xenophobic and murderous lot they are, find unacceptable. To live, a werewolf would have to spin a web of lies and keeping track of them all would be a Herculean task. A werewolf would have to live in a state of constant hyperawareness, knowing every person who crosses his path is a potential enemy. Surviving the human horde would be like walking a tightrope a hundred feet above the ground without a safety net. In many ways, a werwolf’s life wouldn’t be too different from his real-world counterparts—those who can’t escape the closet, who can’t break out of the egg, or who can’t bear living their lives as second-class citizens. In short, I didn’t create The Underground’s world—it’s OUR world.

That’s not quite the end of it, though. I was in the middle of an explanation about The Underground to a friend when she interrupted me and said, “so why the space alien?” While working through the obstacles that might confront a werewolf, I began thinking about how someone from another planet might be treated by society’s outcasts if discovered. All things being equal, would they embrace her otherness, recognize her as kindred and hide her amongst themselves? Or, like humans, would they reject her, see her as a threat and betray her presence to the larger world? I had no answer. But the question intrigued me so I decided to explore it.

So, it seems that the trials faced by werewolves and other paranormals trying to survive in a world where exposure means certain death aren’t much different from those faced by any other persecuted people in the real world. Which led me to yet another question. What would happen in The Underground’s world—or in this one—if the downtrodden reached the breaking point and decided they wouldn’t take their lot anymore? History tells us the answer. Oppress people long enough and hard enough, they will eventually rise up. And the results won’t be pretty.

That isn’t the end of it, either. The oppression of outcasts by a murderous majority is only The Underground’s backdrop. If humans outnumber paranormals by orders of magnitude, the question became is how to increase the paranormals’ chances of survival. Thinking on it, I figured they’d be more successful if they belonged to various groups—a werewolf pack, for instance—based on their paranormal traits. Your own kind understands you and can provide the companionship and support you need. In short, someone always has your back.

In The Underground, there aren’t just werewolves. There are other shapeshifter races, witches, elves, and vampires. Would the different races of paranormals get along with one another? One would think that if they’re all in the same boat, they would be willing to row together. Not necessarily so. I’m a person of color and by and large, we live at a lower social and economic status established by the racial/economic majority. Those of us who attempt to move up are often faced with barriers, some insurmountable. One would think people of color would work together for the betterment of all, but they often don’t. The commonalities are acknowledged, yet we choose to focus on our differences and worse, often judge each other by the same criteria those in power use to judge all people of color. I couldn’t see why paranormals should be any different. After all, they’re subject to and shaped by the same societal forces that shape humans.

But paranormals are not human, and this is where The Underground ventures into dark territory. Paranormals outclass humans physically and their preternatural powers put them over the top. And being endowed with preternatural power presents complications of its own. Why would a werewolf fear a vampire? Witches have strong magick, why would they fear a wererat? Elves wield glamour, the power to cloud minds so that illusion and reality are indistinguishable. Why would they fear anyone? Also, a universal paranormal trait is quick healing. All things being equal, an injury that would disable or kill a human would have little or no effect on a paranormal. Paranormals aren’t any more prone to violent behavior than humans but because they are not afraid of violence, it may seem they resort to it more often. Though different paranormal groups might have internal controls that keep them functioning as a unit, outside of that, there’s nothing. So how to keep the paranormal groups from constantly fighting one another and risk drawing the attention of humans?

Enter the strongman, a paranormal with preternatural powers so great they make him near-invincible and endow him with the might to impose and enforce a truce between the paranormal factions. The Underground’s strongman is a vampire whose extraordinary powers were acquired as described in the book. He controls paranormals through intimidation, such as the constant threat of sudden, indiscriminate torture and death. Sex is also one of his tools to exert domination, including rape. Other powers he uses is his ability to read and control minds. Because they are constantly kept off-balance, never knowing if they will be punished for a perceived infraction, paranormals fear him and that is what keeps them in line. It’s brutal, yes. But if there isn’t much that will faze a paranormal, it isn’t a stretch to conclude that peace between them can be kept only through extreme measures.

The Underground is a difficult read, deliberately so, and is not for everyone. It’s dark because all things being equal, it seems to me that if paranormals did exist, there would be nothing sugarcoated about their lives. They’d do what they must to survive, which means at times, morals have to be damned—just like in the real world.

Sounds pretty interesting, doesn’t it?  Want to read it for yourself?

In an alternate Seattle, communities of “exotics”–shapeshifters, witches, elves and vampires–live among the murderous human population and are ruled over by the cruel vampire Master, Kurt. The powerful alpha male of the werewolf pack, Parker Berenson, is one of the Master’s enslaved servants and he would like nothing more than to hasten the downfall of the vampire overlord who stole his love, the beautiful mage Garrett Larkin. But in a night city already on the razor’s edge–in the midst of a spate of bloody murders–Parker’s passionate encounter with a stunning interstellar assassin could upset the very delicate balance and ignite a war neither exotics nor humans can survive. Trigger warning: Explicit sex, violence and profanity.

Who is your favorite author?

Do I have to choose just one? If I stick to the romance genre, Becky Monson is definitely a favorite. I love her witty, funny, klutzy characters. I can’t help but sympathize with them and root for a happily ever after.

How do you describe your writing style?

Eclectic. I tend to write the way I read—I’ll read just about any genre (as long as it’s clean 😉 ). I do tend to include a lot of humor (I can’t take much of anything seriously), horses often make an appearance (they’re my favorite animal of all time), and I try really hard to capture the full spectrum of emotions people experience. When the characters and their dialogue are central to the plot, they feel like well-rounded, believable, delicious stories that I’d want to read.

Why should we read your books?

One of my f-a-v-o-r-i-t-e things as an author is getting a quick note from someone who read my books and enjoyed them. It’s an incredible act of vulnerability to me to allow someone to see something so personal to me. All I want as an author is to offer a bit of escapism, a little laughter, some happy sighs, and a feeling of satisfaction when all is said and done.

Have any of your characters been modelled after yourself?

All. The. Time. That’s another thing I think is really cool about writing—it gives me a chance to be introspective and discover parts about myself that I’d otherwise forgotten. I can embrace whatever is quirky or interesting about myself and bestow those traits to my characters. They always deliver it in a much more enjoyable way than I ever could because they have the benefit of me thinking it through before they do it.

If you could exchange lives with any of your characters for a day which character would you choose and why?

I’m not sure I could choose just one…each time I get to peek into the life of one of my characters, I’m thoroughly entertained. Yes, they are fictitious but it’s a reflection of real life. I did have to choose ONE, I think I’d like to be Ruby from When a Star Falls, my Pop Stars Series. She’s a regular gal with a knack for music and songwriting, who’s unexpectedly catapulted into stardom. As an introvert, it would be interesting to live that kind of extroverted lifestyle…just for a day.

What books have most influenced your life?

There are so many! Beyond the scriptures, I have loved and been impressed by classics like Black Beauty by Anna Sewell and Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie. Then there are more modern ones, like Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine and These is My Words by Nancy E. Turner. Honestly, I can’t think of a book that didn’t have an influence on my life, even if it was only to entertain me for a few hours.

If you could select one book that you could rewrite and add your own unique twist on, which book would that be and why?

Hmm…I haven’t thought much about redoing another’s work because I’m usually in awe of another person’s storytelling abilities and don’t feel like I could add to it. I will say, I would love to give Black Beauty a modern twist because, horses. 😉 Can’t ever have too many horse books as far as I’m concerned.

Beatles or Monkees? Why?

Monkees, ‘cause that’s what I remember my mom listening to, although my husband is a staunch Beatles supporter. I’m sort of stuck in the middle.

Who should play you in a film of your life?

If I could choose anyone, I’d be honored to have Audrey Hepburn portray me, not because I look anything like her, but because I think she’s a fascinating person with an incredible history. If we’re talking about looks alone, I’ve been told I look like Kirsten Dunst. I’d be alright with her, too.

Blessings of Love – Book 3 – “Bless His Heart” by Jessica L. Elliott

Today’s the release date for the third book of the fantastic BLESSINGS OF LOVE sweet romance novella series (my book is out this Friday).  Today, it’s BLESS HIS HEART, by Jessica L. Elliott.

First, a little about Jessica

For as long as she can remember, Jessica L. Elliott has been telling stories. As soon as she could grasp a pencil she began writing those stories down. Reading fueled her imagination, as did spending time with her five younger brothers and sisters. Everything was an adventure, something to be treasured and stories were her first love. Jessica began seriously writing in high school and continued into college while attending Emporia State University where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She wrote and released her first novel, Charming Academy, in August of 2011. Jessica currently lives in southwest Kansas with her husband and children.

Greyson Able desperately wants to bring his grandmother, Georgie, to Kansas City where she’ll be closer to him and have better access to the things he’s sure the quaint town of Blessings lacks. Sweet, determined Georgie has other ideas, like staying put and a scheme to set him up with her next door neighbor, Hope.

Hope Fields has seen Georgie Able in action enough to recognize the matchmaking glint in her eye. She’s determined to ignore her elderly neighbor’s attempts to set her up with her grandson, especially when Greyson’s disdain for Blessings is so obvious. Unfortunately, it’s easier said than done, because Georgie shows up at her job, Healing Hoofbeats, with Greyson in tow.

As the town’s Thanksgiving festivities approach, Hope’s determination wanes. Will her love be enough to bless Greyson’s heart?

One love pact, two brothers, and the woman caught between them.

Michelle Bright is back in her hometown of Blessings, Kansas for Thanksgiving break – and so is her childhood crush. The last time she saw him was the night she confessed her feelings and got soundly rejected. But a chance meeting with his older brother stirs up plans for a fake relationship that might just have her crush eating out of the palm of her hand.

Joseph Reeve’s military career is over, but he can’t seem to adjust back to civilian life. He longs to be the hero again. A man on a mission. When the lovely Michelle shares her plight, he jumps into action, knowing his little brother has always gone after the women he dated. Faking a relationship would practically guarantee his brother’s interest in Michelle. As long as Joseph doesn’t fall for her himself…

This complicated holiday romance just might make them thankful that love doesn’t always go the way they plan.
