Rowan’s sister, Briahanna, is rumored to the Chosen one. Now he is faced with

long enough for their good fortune to find them. Briahanna may just be the one
that completes the prophecy and saves the family name but she is too busy
cleaning up her siblings’ messes to fulfill her destiny. And life has just
dealt her another blow…she must marry a man she does not love.

Hera, Queen of the Gods, wants Briahanna, Rowan and
all the Mercier children dead. She will do everything in power to see them and
their bloodline stricken from existence. But she must be careful for her first
attempt left them part vampire.

posed to realize her destiny of greatness? Or will she crumble under pressure?

Year in Review

Year in Review

The end of the year is a natural time to take stock of things, and while there have been some very difficult times in this past year, both personally and professionally, things are ending on a higher note.

Specifically with the Dream Series, I’m very happy with how things are looking.  December has been the best sales month ever (thanks largely to a Bookbub promotion), and I imagine that some of you reading this are here because of that.  I hope you’ll stick around!

I published two new books this year, and had DREAM FAMILY and WAKING DREAM released on Audible audiobooks, to join the first three books, as well as Betty & Howard’s Excellent Adventure, which were already on audiobook from 2013.  I also released a mini box set of the first three books, which is available both as an ebook and an audiobook.

As of this moment, I’ve had 2,604 sales of the books across the whole series and all formats in 2014, and 48.476 downloads of DREAM STUDENT, which has been free on Kindle (and elsewhere) since August.  Just in December, I’ve had 743 sales and over 26,000 downloads of DREAM STUDENT.  So I’m excited about the series really taking off as people read the first book and hopefully move on to the rest of the books.

Speaking of that, I’m working on book #9 in the Dream Series right now.  It’s about a quarter of the way finished.  Progress has been slow for the last month, because we’ve had a lot going on in our family.  But starting next week I hope to get back to making regular progress.  I had hoped to have the book out on March 31st, but I think it might slip until the end of April.  There’s probably one more Dream Series book after that one, which I’d like to have out by the end of October, and I’ve got a couple of other things I’m hoping to get working on as well.

To keep up with all my news in 2015, just keep checking here, or you can also sign up for my mailing list by filling in the very easy form on the right side of this page.

Anyway, I hope you had a good year this year, and I hope you have a great one in 2015!  And THANK YOU for visiting here!

Reading in Public – “Winter’s Tale” (part 3, chapter 4 – “…and The Ghost”)

Reading in Public – “Winter’s Tale” (part 3, chapter 4 – “…and The Ghost”)

Onwards, with one more chapter of background, backstory and explanation.  This one is a lot of fun – a dive deep into the mind of Craig Binky, editor and publisher of the New York Ghost.  You know what you’re in for when the first sentence of the chapter reads:

Look, there is no sane, organized way to describe The Ghost, and no place to start.

Helprin begins with an account of a civil war within the ranks of The Ghost, over the topic of white wine.  Specifically:

those who said that white wine came from fish, and those who maintained that it didn’t, although they either would not or could not say where it did come from.

Things only get weirder from there; it’s very entertaining reading, and I’m sure all of us have worked with or for someone who is Binkian, Binkyesque or even Binkotic – I certainly see shades of an old boss or two in the description of Binky’s dealings with his staff, and his baffling office policies.

We also get a glimpse of The Ghost’s one true area of excellence: headline writing.  These headlines are at most vaguely related to the actual stories in the paper; more often they’re entirely unconnected – but they are eye-catching all the same. The ultimate example Helprin gives us is this beauty:

“Dead Model Sues Race Horse”

As noted earlier, The Ghost is very clearly modeled on the New York Post, and the Post’s headline writers are nearly as gifted as Helprin’s fictional Ghost-writers; I imagine the author had a good laugh at the most famous ever Post headline, written not that long after this book was published: “Headless Body in Topless Bar”.

At the end of the chapter, we dip back into the actual narrative – a helicopter lands on the roof of the Ghost’s headquarters (right across Printing House Square from the headquarters of The Sun, naturally), a messenger emerges and races through the building to Craig Binky’s office.  Moments later, Binky orders every plane in the Ghost’s fleet of corporate planes to be ready for takeoff.  With their leader in the flagship – looking out at his own personal air force from a giant plastic bubble atop the fuselage of his plane – the Ghost planes take off and head to the east, out over the Atlantic Ocean (despite filing a flight plan for Brownsville, Texas).  Where were they going?

No one knew, except Craig Binky.  And Craig Binky wasn’t telling.

Helprin doesn’t tell us, either – we’ll have to wait until the next chapter to find out.

Not as much to analyze in this chapter; it’s probably the least “necessary” chapter in the entire book – but don’t skip over it!  Helprin’s prose is wonderful, as always.  His descriptions of Craig Binky’s style of office communication alone are worth the time to read this short chapter.

Next up – the plot begins moving in earnest…

Author Spotlight – Janet Lynn & Will Zeilinger and “Slivers of Glass”

Author Spotlight – Janet Lynn & Will Zeilinger and “Slivers of Glass”

I’ve got not one, but two authors for you this morning after Christmas.  Say hello to Janet Lynn and will Zeilinger!

BW Janet Bill 01

JANET ELIZABETH LYNN was born in Queens, New York and raised in Long Island, until she was 12 years old. Her family escaped the freezing winters and hurricanes for the warmth and casual lifestyle of Southern California.

Janet has always wanted to write and made it a quest to write a novel. Ten years later, with much blood and sweat, her first murder mystery novel, South of the Pier, was published in 2011. She has since written seven more mysteries. Miss Lynn has traveled to the far reaches of the planet for work and for pleasure, collecting wonderful memories, new found friends and a large basket of shampoo and conditioner samples from hotels.

At one time Janet was an Entertainment Editor for a newspaper in Southern California.

WILL ZEILINGER  has been writing for over twelve years. During that time, he took novel writing classes and joined writer’s groups, but what has helped the most are published authors who mentor, encourage, critique  and listen to him while he continued to learn the craft.  At the time of this writing, Will has published three novels (Ebooks.) The Naked Groom,  Something’s Cooking at Dove Acres, and The Final Checkpoint (also in print).

As a youth he lived overseas with his family. As an adult he traveled the world. Will lives in Southern California with his wife Janet Elizabeth Lynn, who is also an author. Will says that finding time to write while life happens is a challenge.

And here’s their book!

Slivers_of_Glass_cover

Summer 1955: The body of a woman thought to be killed three years earlier is found behind a theater in Hollywood.  Movie stuntman Skylar Drake, a former LAPD detective, is dragged into the investigation. He can make no sense of the crime until he discovers a dirty underworld and unearths deep-seated… greed.

The hunt takes Drake to places he’d never expect.  He’s anxious to close this case and get back to his business in L.A., but he’s constantly haunted by the memory of his wife and young daughter, killed in a mysterious house fire.

With more than enough dirty cops, politicians and crime bosses to go around, Drake can trust no one including Martin Card, the cop assigned to work with him.

You can buy the book at either of the author websites listed above…

They’ve provided us with an excerpt from the book, but before we get to that, Janet’s also given us another treat…

photo

Looks good, doesn’t it?  Here’s how to make it:

Ambrosia

A very popular dessert in the 1950’s, served at the famous Coconut Grove in Los Angeles. The “Grove” was known for its great cuisine. The Coconut Grove is featured in one of the scenes in Slivers of Glass, a Noir murder mystery.

Ingredients

2 oranges or tangerines

Sugar

2 bananas

shredded coconut, unsweetened

Direction

Peel the oranges or tangerines. Pull the pieces apart; cut the pieces across the middle. Peel the bananas and cut them into thin slices.

Cover the bottom of the bowl with orange pieces. Sprinkle 1-2 teaspoon sugar over oranges (depending on the sweetness of the oranges/tangerines). Put some banana slices on oranges, and then sprinkle a little coconut over bananas.

Do the same thing for the next layer, first the oranges, sugar, bananas and coconut. Make more layers, using all the fruit.

Sprinkle coconut on top. Cover with plastic wrap, refrigerator for 1 hour. Serves 3-4

And…here’s the excerpt from “Slivers of Glass”

There were a dozen other things I could’ve been doing besides standing in line at the drug store listening to Bill Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock” piped in overhead.  Though, it was a treat to watch the cashier move behind the counter in her form-fitting white smock. I shook my head and plopped a tube of Pepsodent and a couple of toothbrushes on the pharmacy counter.

She looked up and said, “That will be seventy-five cents, Mr. Drake.”

I dug in my pocket and dropped three quarters in her hand, “Thank you, Miss Abernathy.” She placed my items in a small white paper bag and folded over the top. “Here you are, and quit calling me that.  My name is Emily. Anyway, this should keep you smiling brightly. I only wish I could see yours sometime.”

In all the times I’ve walked to this drug store, I couldn’t remember a day she didn’t smile at me. Too bad there was a ‘y’ at the end of Emily’s name. Women with names like Sandy, Cathy or Abby were bad luck. Those ‘y’  women were always trouble and it would be dangerous to get mixed up with another one now.

“Thanks,” I tipped my hat, “When I have something to smile about, I might just show you.” I knew Emily pretty well since this place was only a couple of blocks from my apartment, an apartment I lived in because a fire took my home along with my beautiful wife Claire and Ellen my little girl.

As I turned to leave, I winked at the two little old ladies behind me.  They stepped back and stared as if I’d just sneezed in their faces. I turned and waved goodbye to Emily only to see her pointing behind me in horror. I followed her gaze and saw a dark green car hurtling toward us – right through the huge windows at the front of the store! The gigantic crash at my back sent shelves, boxes and cans hurtling in our direction. I turned around as glass, smoke and debris seemed to explode in a cloud around us. At that moment my training from the Marine Corps took over. I instinctively swept up the two ladies and Emily and pushed them to the back of the store. The other customers ran screaming out the huge opening where the storefront windows used to be. I shielded the women against the back wall with my body all the while knowing that my weight could suffocate them, but what else could I do? The ceiling could come down on us at any moment. I held them against the wall while listening to my heart pound.  Slowly the tinkle of glass subsided and I released them. Tiny slivers of glass and wood had embedded themselves in my sweater and trousers. “You’d better be careful,” One of the little old women chirped, “Your backside looks like a pin cushion.  Best not to sit down for a while.”

Reading in Public – “Winter’s Tale” (part 3, chapter 3 – “The Sun…”)

Reading in Public – “Winter’s Tale” (part 3, chapter 3 – “The Sun…”)

After the return of Peter Lake in the last chapter, we skip ahead a couple of months to the springtime – specifically May 15th, and we drop in on a party aboard the Staten Island Ferry (the same boat that picked Peter up in the harbor?  It’s not stated, but I’d say it’s very likely).

It’s an anniversary party – the 125th anniversary of the New York Sun.  Owner and publisher Harry Penns (still in charge of the newspaper his father created) invited every employee of the paper to this celebration, and gave each of them a special gift – a check worth a year’s salary.  So, as one would imagine, spirits are fairly high.

Hardesty Maratta and his wife Virginia (now parents of a little girl, Abby, in addition to her son Martin), are especially happy – as they both work at the Sun, they’re doing quite well for themselves.  We find them dancing among many other couples, out on deck, as the ferry cruises past the George Washington Bridge, which:

sparkled with blue and white diamonds and looked wide enough and broad enough to cradle the world in its curve.

The ferry sails on, until walls of white clouds (naturally) appear, seemingly drawn up as though they were curtains.  And the the orchestra begins to play

an apocalyptically beautiful canon, one of those pieces in which, surely, the composer simply transcribed what was given.

I read a book about Richard Wagner in which the author describes the music accompanying the entrance of the Grail Knights in Act III of Parsifal as “the soundtrack to the End of the World” – I kind of imagine that’s what the partygoers are hearing in this scene (although to be honest, Wagner probably isn’t what Helprin is going for here.  But we can talk about Wagner, and the conclusion of his Ring Cycle, Gotterdammerung, when we get to the end of the book).

At any rate, everyone is overwhelmed.

Whatever would come, would come.  Whatever they would see, they would see.  And they would be thankful to have seen it.

We go from the party to a somewhat long, quirky (some critics might say totally unnecessary – I disagree, but I can understand the point) look at the inner workings of the New York Sun, from its origins to its organization to the layout of the headquarters building and even the compensation structure.  I think it’s very interesting, and, hey, part of the point of a novel is to have room for this sort of thing.

The Sun, sort of, is a stand-in for the New York Times, although the Times was never remotely close to the sort of idyllic workplace or truly great newspaper that the Sun is depicted as (this is in contrast to the New York Ghost, which is very clearly a poke in the eye at the New York Post).

We get a little bit more about the rivalry between the Sun and the Ghost; we hear the tale of the death of Ghost founder Rupert Binky (grandfather to Craig).  He’s killed by “an enraged swan” at Oxford, and a group of rowers hear his last words: “Crush the Sun.”

Far from being the mystical and elevated utterance that they thought it was, this was a specific instruction immediately grasped by his grandson

The rivalry between the papers extended to their editorials, and it’s here that we rejoin Virginia Gamely (now Marratta), who’s become a regular columnist for the Sun, and whose columns appear in the eclectic “Editorial IV” section, where just about anything goes.  Her columns are quite deep:

simultaneously metaphysical and sensual, talk(ing) about ultimate purpose, symmetry, beauty, God, the devil, balance, justice and time.  This was a Coheeries trait.

Harry Penn, no stranger to any of that, sees that there’s going to be a problem.

“Do you realize,” he asked right off the bat, “that because of these essays The Sun will be viciously attacked?”

She doesn’t, and he has to explain matters to her:

“You can’t expect anyone to trust revelation if he hasn’t experienced it himself.  And since revelation is a thing apart, and cannot be accounted for reasonably, they will never believe you.”

Remember Beverly Penn, and what she saw, and her father’s despair that he could not see or understand the visions vouchsafed to her?  And her insistence that it didn’t matter whether Peter Lake believed her or not?  This fits right in with that.

Harry asks Virginia where she’s from, and it turns out they’ve met before, although she doesn’t remember.  It was when she was a little girl, and (as we’ll learn later) he delivered the news that her father had died in the war (which war is a whole other question).

Harry Penn runs the article and his words are borne out.  The Ghost attacks her, as do other intellectuals in the city.  This only encourages Virginia all the more:

Virginia had seen Mrs. Gamely pick up her shotgun and pump away at marauders in the night, and in many respects she was just like her mother, which is not to say that the course she chose was wise or correct – it was neither – but, rather, that it was spirited.  Abandoning caution, she took out after her enemies.

There’s a great debate among the management of The Sun on whether to run Virginia’s response to the attacks.  Harry Penn chooses not only to run it, but to print it on the front page.  Virginia is surprised and relieved; she had feared it would not be run, or even that she had gone too far and might be fired.  But she is not chastened by the experience, and she quickly continues, writing columns such as “The Mayor Looks Like an Egg.  Period.” and (my favorite) “Craig Binky and the Question of Mental Nudity.”

There’s some talk at the paper wondering why Harry Penn is so tolerant of Virginia, even including speculation that she’s his mistress, but as the chapter ends, we’re given no answer (we will find out later in the book, however).

Despite the fact that not a lot happens in this chapter (kind of a surprise after the previous chapter, which was pretty eventful), it’s a fun read.  We’ve got one more chapter in a similar vein, with a closer look at Craig Binky and his fiefdom, before things really begin moving at a faster clip…

Cover Reveal – “Eban” (The Heckmasters, book 2) by Allison Merritt

Cover Reveal – “Eban” (The Heckmasters, book 2) by Allison Merritt

I featured Allison Merritt and the first book in her Heckmasters series a couple of months ago.  Her second book is about to come out, and she wants y’all to see her cover…so, without further ado:

Eban cover

If love can’t save them, there will be hell to pay.

Grateful for his mother’s human blood that cools the dark fire of his demon father, Eban Heckmaster has set up a medical practice in New Mexico territory. But there’s no hope of living a normal life until he rids himself of a seductive demon that’s been pursuing him.

Vanquishing it won’t be as simple as sharpening his demon-hunting sword. The clever creature is hiding inside his best friend’s head, and she has no idea of the havoc she’s been wreaking, especially with his body.

Beryl suspects Eban knows why she’s been waking up with no memory of where she’s been or what she’s done, but he’s not talking. But when she inevitably learns what he’s hiding—or rather, what’s hiding inside her—she wonders if her love for him is real, or an illusion created by the demon’s lust.

Eban is losing the battle to hold his rising desire in check. There may be only one way to extricate Beryl from the beast entangling her mind. Call upon his demon blood…and offer it as a sacrifice.

Warning: Contains a half-human, half-demon doctor who can heal anyone except himself, and a woman who’d blush if she could remember the sensuous torture she’s been inflicting on him. Could make you wonder if you should start listening to the voices in your head…

The book will be out in April of 2015 (can you believe it’s nearly 2015 already?), and you can keep tabs on Allison and all her books at various places on the Interwebs…

Winter Warm-Up!

Winter Warm-Up!

Young couple embracing

I’m thrilled to be participating in the Winter Warm Up Blog Hop.

It’s all about the romance of winter…which I completely get.  If you know me at all, you know that winter is my favorite season.  I think it’s also, by far, the most romantic time of year.

Everything is heightened – it’s in the air, all around you.  Picture it.  Imagine a couple doing something as simple as having dinner at a restaurant.  But there’s a chill in the air that makes them feel more alive.  They can hear snatches of Christmas carols drifting past.  Beautiful lights twinkle all around them.  On the table, candlelight flickers as the lovers look into each other’s eyes.  A simple meal becomes magical at this time of year.

Think of all the other wintertime traditions that are intertwined with romance.  A couple decorating the Christmas tree together.  Or sharing a New Year’s kiss at midnight.  Or just clutching to each other as they walk home in the frosty night air, keeping each other warm and safe.

No question, it’s the most romantic season.  And it’s no coincidence, I think, that the majority of my Dream Series books take place in the winter.  The first book, DREAM STUDENT, takes place in the winter of 1989-90.  Sara and Brian exchange their first-ever Christmas presents, and have their first “grown-up” date on New Year’s Eve.

The third book, DREAM CHILD, takes place around Christmas of 1996, and Sara and Brian share that holiday with their daughter, Lizzie.  It’s the first Christmas she’ll properly remember, and it turns out to be a very memorable one for the whole family.

Book number five, WAKING DREAM, jumps forward three more years to the winter of 1999-2000.  Once again, both Christmas and New Year’s feature in the story.

And the seventh book, DREAM HOME, is all about winter – specifically a winter storm that endangers the lives of Sara, her family, and everyone in the small town they’ve just moved to.

Please check out the many other great authors participating in this Blog Hop, and also take a look at my books:

And Merry Christmas!

Oh – one more thing – it wouldn’t be Christmas without a gift, and you’ve got a chance to win one.  A $75 Amazon Gift Card, to be exact…just enter the giveaway below for your chance!  AND, just by commenting on this post, you can win a set of my first five Dream Series books (either ebook or audiobook, your choice)…just comment to this post for your entry into that giveaway!
