A More Detailed Look Ahead

A More Detailed Look Ahead

I posted about this last week, but I’ve tried to project ahead with a more concrete plan about what’s to come for the Dream Series (and my other writing, if I can ever get it done!) over the next year and a half or so.  So here’s what I’m hoping to accomplish:

“Dream Home” (book #7) will be out on May 23rd.  That’s set in stone.  And you already know what that’s about.

Next will be the audiobook edition of “Waking Dream” (book 5), which I hope to have out for sale the last week in June (it’s just started production, so the timing on this is up in the air)

Following that will be the audiobook edition of “Dream Reunion” (book 6), which is currently scheduled to be out the last week in August (this is more up in the air, obviously!)

“Dream Vacation” (book #8) will be released on October 31st, 2014.  I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to make this date.  And what will it be about?  Sara, Brian and the kids will be heading to Europe for a week’s vacation, followed by a trip to Scotland for Janet Black’s wedding.  There’s sure to be last-minute drama from Janet, difficulties with fellow tourists, and some serious growing pains for Grace (if you’re familiar with Jane Austen, think about what happens with Lydia Bennet and Mr. Wickham…).

Sometime before the end of November, I expect that the audiobook edition of “Dream Home” will be up for sale, but this is obviously really tentative!

“The Twelve Dreams of Christmas” is scheduled for December 12th.  My plan is for a collection of a dozen short pieces (2,000-4,000 words), each from the perspective of a different character in the Dream Series, and all taking place around Christmastime.  So far, the stories I’m thinking will definitely appear are:

  • Helen Alderson’s take on her first meeting with Sara (recounted from Sara’s point of view in “Dream Student”)
  • Betty Barnes’ view of the birth of her first grandchild (Lizzie’s birth, which takes place in between “Dream Doctor” and “Dream Child”),
  • Grace’s first Christmas as a member of the Alderson family (a couple of months after the events of “Dream Family”),
  • Beth’s visit to Sara’s house during Christmas break of their freshman year in college (mentioned in passing in “Dream Student”)
  • Janet Black’s Christmas visit with Sara and the rest of the Aldersons (in between “Dream Reunion” and “Dream Home”)
  • Ben and Steffy’s experiences in Christmas of 2003 (a month after the events of “Dream Home”)
  • I still need to figure out stories for: Brian, the other Ben (Brian’s father) Bob, Lizzie, Howard, Aunt Kat.

Next up, but this is a lot more uncertain, will hopefully be the launch of a standalone book (or, possibly the first in its own series), which I’ve mentioned here before.  It’s Jane’s story (one of the girls from Sara’s dorm in “Dream Student”, and we also meet her in “Betty & Howard’s Excellent Adventure’ ten years later), tentatively titled “Queen of the Idiots”.  If I can make good progress on it while also working on the Dream books, my plan would be to launch it on January 23, 2015.  But stay tuned on that.

I hope that I’ll have the audiobook edition of “Dream Vacation” produced and up for sale by the end of February, 2015.

The next definite launch after that will be “Shattered Dream” (book 9), on March 17, 2015.  I’m pretty sure this will happen right on time, as I’ve already got 12,000 words written for this book.  It starts with the sudden and mystifying death of one of Sara’s patients, which leads Sara to dig into other unexplained deaths at the hospital, some of them dating back to before she started working there.  She’ll discover a cover-up, reveal a conspiracy and find herself in danger that threatens to destroy not just her life, but the lives of everyone she cares about.

Sometime in this gap, during the summer of 2015, I expect the audiobook editions of both “Shattered Dream” and “Queen of the Idiots” (if I finish it) to be available for sale.

On September 18, 2015, Book 10 of the Dream Series will be launched.  I’m not sure if it will be the final book of the series, “Dream Wedding” or if there will be another story in between “Shattered Dream” and “Dream Wedding”.  Obviously, “Dream Wedding” will feature the wedding of one of Sara’s children, either Grace or Lizzie, and it’ll take place in the summer of 2013.I’m leaning towards possibly putting another book in there, though.  There may be room for a story after what happens in “Shattered Dream” and it might be time for Sara’s father, Howard Barnes, to step forward and have a much bigger role.  We’ll see…

By the end of November, 20115, I hope to have the audiobook edition of book 10 produced and available.

And, finally, there’ll be a book launched on December 11th.  It will either be “Dream Wedding” (if book 10 turns out to be a different story), or it’ll be a totally new book (maybe a second Jane story, or maybe Beth will get her own book, if I can come up with a story for her, or maybe it’ll be something totally new.  I really don’t know yet!).

I can say that I’ve already written the very final chapter of the Dream Series, the epilogue that will go at the end of “Dream Wedding”.  It just came to me, what that chapter had to be, and I think it’s just a perfect end to the series.  But, even after “Dream Wedding” comes out, there will still be room for more stories in the world of the Dream Series – and not only stories about Sara….

So there you have it – plenty to look forward to!

The Semi-final Draft of Dream Home

The Semi-final Draft of Dream Home

It’s done!  I think the book is pretty much in its final form.  There are still a couple of beta readers to hear from, and at least one more pass to catch any lingering typos or other minor fixed.  But the book is pretty much where it needs to be.

With the front and back matter and acknowledgements, it comes in at 92,946 words, which brings the total word count for the entire Dream Series to 667,998 words.  That’s a heck of a lot!

AND, you’ll all be able to read it for yourselves in just 18 days!

“Dream Home” – a sneak peek!

“Dream Home” – a sneak peek!

It’s coming out in just 19 days, but since this is Sneak Peek Sunday, here’s a little preview of the upcoming seventh book in the Dream Series…

Sara is in an unfamiliar room, an unfamiliar house.  It’s a living room, but one that hasn’t been updated since sometime around World War II, to judge by the look of things.  There’s an elderly man sitting in a rocking chair, slowly swaying back and forth.  Sara recognizes him: Joshua Skinner, owner of the small general store on Division Street

Joshua is staring out the large picture window at a winterscape that looks to Sara like something out of a disaster movie.  The bare trees are swaying violently in the wind, while drifts of snow blow through the air.  Off in the distance, amidst the frozen gray gloom, Sara can see what she thinks is a fire; someone’s home or business burning to the ground.

“I warned them, but would anybody listen?  No!”  Joshua reaches to the table next to him just as a particularly powerful blast of wind shakes the entire house.  He holds the book up as though he’s addressing all the people he apparently warned – it’s the Farmer’s Almanac, Sara sees.  “It’s 1947 all over again.  Just you wait and see, Fred,” he says.  Sara knows Fred, too – she looks down to the floor to see the beagle that she and Chrissy have gotten to be good friends with, sitting at Joshua’s feet, ears perked up.

“Yeah, just like 1947.  Even worse, maybe.  We’ll be burying half the town before it’s done with, I expect.”

Sara digs into her memories, but she finds nothing about 1947.  She assumes it must have been a blizzard like this, but it’s the twenty-first century now.  Towns aren’t wiped out by winter storms.  She can’t imagine how even the most severe blizzard could cause fires or destroy homes or kill anyone in a small town full of solidly-built houses and self-reliant people who make a habit of preparing for the worst…

***

Even before I open my eyes, my hand is reaching over to the side table.  It’s amazing that this has become an automatic reaction after less than a month.  My fingers find their target, and I shove my glasses onto my face.

That was a very nasty birthday surprise.  “You’ve just turned thirty-five.  Congratulations, your eyesight is shot!”  I’m being silly; it’s not actually as bad as all that.  I’ve got a pretty weak prescription, and the glasses themselves are fairly stylish.  They’re wire-rimmed, black, and I already don’t really notice them, which I guess is a good thing.

I feel like I should be looking for something else, though.  A newspaper?  No, a book.  A book with – why am I thinking of weather reports?

I was dreaming.  I saw Mr. Skinner from the general store.  He was reading from his Farmer’s Almanac, staring out the window, and talking to his dog about some horrible winter storm we’re due to have.

Whew!

Whew!

I’ve spent all afternoon getting updated versions of all the books uploaded onto Kindle and also Smashwords.  It is very tedious work!

The reason I decided to do this was that I wanted to add links for the next book, “Dream Home” to all of the existing books.  And as long as I was doing that, I decided to go ahead and fix the typos I was aware of, make sure that all the books had the same information at the end (links for readers to go straight to Amazon to leave a review; the address for this website, my email address, links to the audiobooks, etc).  And I did a decent update on the Box of Dreams collection  – updating the files for all five books in that document, too.

And then I had to create a separate version for Smashwords, because their formatting requirements are different than Amazon.  But it’s all done now.  All the books are as up-to-date and correct as I can make them, with the nice new covers, and everything else done.  The only task left is to do the same thing for the paperback editions, but that’s a little more involved, and I don’t have the energy to do it today.  I also don’t know how to do something I’d really like to do – include the image from Ami Low’s original handpainted covers on the inside back cover of the books.  I’m not sure if that’s even an option, or, if it would add enough cost to the paperbacks that it wouldn’t be worth it.  So there’s a research project for another day!

Book Launch! “Prim And Proper” by Jordan K. Rose

Book Launch! “Prim And Proper” by Jordan K. Rose

Prim & Proper blurb

A formal vampire reception is just that- formal. There are rules. There are expectations. There are certain security measures that must be taken.

The list of things that should not occur includes, but is not limited to: duels for subjugation, bar brawls, and accidental, er, unintentional, well, not-meant-to-happen-at-that-moment demon calling.

Drinking from other master vampires, turning new vampires without permission, and reliving your first kiss, which happened to be with a serial killer are absolutely inappropriate.

Having your demon-vampire-husband-master end up with an incurable case of vamnesia adds another level of complexity to the festivities, not to mention your marriage.

But Eva Prim has caused…experienced…survived, yes, that’s the word. Eva and Stefan have survived other difficult challenges and she’s confident they’ll laugh about this some night. She thinks. Maybe.

Excerpt

And the Master will rule them all with a swift and firm hand…
And probably the threat of The Book, too. But that’s just my guess.

Chapter One
The lights flicker. A gust of wind whooshes through the office. Someone howls an eerie cry, and my heart picks up speed.

“I got one! I got one!” I hop up and down once before being firmly held in place by three sets of hands.

“Hold steady.” Stefan stands behind me, his entire body is firm as marble, molded around mine like a protective casing. “Do not falter, my flower. Steady.” His heavy Greek accent gives away his nerves.

“I got this. You’re crowding me.” I try to wiggle free, but that’s like trying to loosen a straitjacket. “Will you give me some space?”

“Don’t do it,” Martin says. He and Cheng, Stefan’s long-time demon-hunting partners, crowd closer, leaving not one inch of my body unprotected. “I knew this was a bad idea.” He grunts.

Cheng hisses at a demonic voice laughing behind him. “I still think we should have waited until after the Centennial Celebration.”

“That’s months away. I’m not waiting.” I twist sideways, only able to move a few inches. “And this is going just fine. I’m doing a great job.” A natural demon caller, that’s what I am.

Something crashes into a wall and more laughter follows.

“You’re making it impossible for me to see what I’m doing.” I push against their chests, but no one moves. “Really? Really? You call this a lesson?”

“You do not need to see what you’re doing. Just focus on your chant,” Stefan says. His voice has held the same agitated tone all night. “Start again.”

I huff and tap my foot to the beat of “Roar” by Katie Perry. “Come to me demon. Shoe-zing your master. You’re gonna kneel on the floor. Oh. Oh. Oh.”

“No!” all three of them shout.

Just as quickly as it started the pandemonium in the office dies, and the three men step away from me.

“You’ll never get this if you don’t memorize the chant,” Martin says.

“Darling, why do you insist on chanting to popular tunes?” Stefan turns me to face him. “Is it not enough that I’ve given you the words? Why must you put a beat to them?”

I want to answer but I’m a bit surprised at what I see. The office is a complete disaster. Furniture is literally upended. Lights have been smashed. The mirror behind the bar is shattered.

And all three men look like they’ve just walked through a war zone.

Stefan’s long black hair is a wild mess. His forehead has a bruise, and his shoulder is bleeding.

Martin’s shirt is shredded and falls to the floor when he leans to set the couch onto its feet. Bulging welts mar his back. He is the blackest man I’ve ever met. I’m pretty sure he’s also the biggest. He’s damn close to seven feet tall and everything from his hair to his skin to his clothing is black as night. But those welts are red and puffy.

Cheng’s braid still hangs perfectly straight, kept in place by the long silver blade he’s stashed inside. His clothes, however, are ruined, giving a clear view of the claw marks running down his back.

I scratch my head. “Well, it’s just that I have a hard time remembering the demon babble so a beat sort of helps.”

You’d have a hard time, too. The words sound ridiculous. Shoe-zing?

Cheng’s eyes bulge. “How many times do we have to do this before you believe that your tune is what’s pissing off these damn demons?” He rips the rest of his shirt off and uses it to dab at a gash in his side.

Martin glides behind the bar, righting bar stools as he goes. “Demons, for the most part, are simple creatures. They like simple things. They know the demon call and will respond to it if it’s done in the appropriate way.” When he reaches for a bottle of blood on a high shelf, his dreadlocks tumble over his shoulder. He’s lost about a foot off each thick coil on his left side, making his hair completely lopsided.
Cheng looks away, suddenly interested in a magazine lying open on the floor.

Stepping around Stefan, I do a quick check of his hair and find it’s all still hanging in the back. “Martin, your—”
Stefan shakes his head.

“Darling, from now on just say the words in a low, even chant. Please.” His fingers capture my chin and his lips come to mine for a quick peck. “Your singing voice is not…it’s not your strongest suit.”

Cheng lets out a low whistle.

“Fine! I was just trying to make the damn demons feel welcome.” I collapse onto the couch and prop my feet on the coffee table.

“Yeah, well, you are not Mariah Carey.” Martin places a glass for each of us on the table and opens the bottle. “Just hearing the chant in a low, even tone will make them happier.”

“I’m asking one of them. When I finally call one, I’m asking if my singing voice is that bothersome.” I slug back my drink. “It’s not like I had to go through all this to get the last ones.”

Stefan sits at his desk and sighs. “Need we remind you of what happened with the last two?”

I turn up my nose at them. The last two had to be “dealt with” by the three of them because as it turns out not all demons are pleasant. Go figure. “No.” I stand back up.

Demon calling is not only an art, but a true “calling.” Not everyone can do it. At least that’s what they keep telling me. My “hidden” talent came out in the open last year when I accidentally (and it was an accident) released forty demons from The Demon Book.

I’ve been allowed to keep a few. Plus there are about six more still on the run that these three don’t seem to be able to catch without my help. I’m keeping them, too, if we ever finally catch them.

I stretch my arms up over my head and out to my sides. “Want to go again?”

No one bothers to look in my direction. Stefan mumbles some sort of Greek-ish demon saying and sits back in his seat. The other two hunters laugh.
“I don’t know what you said, but it better have been ‘Yes.'” I cram my hands on my hips.
