Welcome Wednesday – All About Autumn

Welcome Wednesday – All About Autumn

Welcome to this week’s edition of Welcome Wednesdays!

Since we’re a couple of weeks into autumn, let’s talk about that this week.  Authors, tell us something about how this season features in one of your books.  It could be a scene that takes place in the fall, it could be a character named Autumn, it could be a book you finished in October – give us something relating to the fall.  And be sure to include a link so we can learn more…

I’ll begin…

A couple of my Dream Series novels take place in the fall.  One of them, DREAM REUNION, has a specific reason for taking place in October – in that book, our heroine, Sara, goes back to college for her 10-year class reunion, which in real life at my college (which Sara’s school was loosely based on) takes place in mid-October.  So, this book had to happen then, too…

  1. Hello! my paranormal romance Marrying A Monster takes in late summer, but I originally wrote it a few years ago for National Novel Writing Month in November. It’s alot of fun to huddle indoors when the nights get colder and longer, and tell my characters’ stories around the fireplace…erm, computer screen.

    A quick story synopsis:

It is a world not quite like ours, where the insect-like Gnosha live alongside humans, cars, and cell phones; and stranger things lurk in the shadows. Rina is a city girl now, but she can’t bring herself to say no when asked to come back home for an old local custom: a symbolic marriage between her town’s young women and the Mountain King, a legendary guardian spirit. As Rina travels home with a handsome but mysterious folklorist, she learns that the Mountain King is real, and a monstrous menace….

  2. My first novel is, Autumn Leaves! Here’s the story:
Angie Demarco is a small town, family girl. She’s the ultimate peace keeping middle daughter of a tight knit family in southeastern Tennessee. When the youngest girl announces to the family that she’s pregnant at 17, it sends shock waves through the family, and Angie finds herself picking up the pieces.

Carter Haage is an active duty soldier stationed two hours north of Angie and her family at Fort Campbell. Upon returning from an arduous deployment, he and some friends take a much needed retreat to her small town.

While Angie and Carter are instantly drawn to each other, the timing is terrible for both of them. Angie is trying to untangle her family’s drama. Carter has committed himself to serve our country. This is a contemporary clean romance novel with a lot of heart, redemption, and family angst.

  3. Swim Season, my epic swim novel, takes place in autumn because that’s when girls varsity swimming happens. Available for preorder through November 1st. Here’s the blurb:

    Sometimes winning is everything.

Champion swimmer Aerin Keane is ready to give up her dreams of college swimming and a shot at the Olympics. As she starts senior year in her third high school, Aerin’s determined to leave her family troubles behind and be like all the other girls at Two Rivers. She’s got a new image and a new attitude. She doesn’t want to win anymore. She’s swimming for fun, no longer the freak who wins every race, every title, only to find herself alone.

But when her desire to be just one of the girls collides with her desire to be the best Two Rivers has ever seen, will Aerin sacrifice her new friendships to break a longstanding school record that comes with a $50,000 scholarship?

  4. Thanks, James!

Here is the beginning of chapter 2 of my SF novel Twin-Bred. The story takes place on the planet Tofarn, on which humans settled (joining a not entirely friendly or comprehensible indigenous population) a little more than seventy years before this scene takes place. The season is in some ways comparable to the beginning of autumn.

    —–

The families gathered in the small meadow, surrounded by what they, if not the Tofa, called trees. Sleepy-eyed children snuggled against the legs of their parents. Adults quietly greeted each other. All wore their warmer clothes, to wait comfortably in the chill air before dawn.

The light grew stronger. The crowd was still, the silence broken only by the sound of the water in the nearby creek and river, and an occasional murmured question from one of the children.

The first ray of sunlight – as they called it – hit the first tree. Murmurs rose to exclamations as the light filled the meadow. With the light came a change more dramatic than the light, as every leaf of ground cover, every frond or scale of every tree, turned from a muted yellow or beige or tan to some shade, any of a dozen shades of purple – violet or lilac or mulberry or mauve or those for which no name had been needed on Earth.

The change swept over and around the meadow, and the children, now fully awake, jumped up and down and clapped and yelled, and some of their parents joined them.
