THE JOY OF CHRISTMAS

by Tara Taylor Quinn

Christmas. My whole life it’s been my pinnacle. The best moments. The most magic. On Christmas Day we put aside all that bothers us, hurts us, ails us, irritates us, frustrates us, and smile at each other. Give to each other. Think of each other. Focus on each other. We create moments with the intention of making others happy.

And we look forward to being loved in return. Through the obvious – presents – but through the treatment we receive from others.

My whole life, whenever I’ve faltered, panicked, been frightened, worried, depressed, I could think of Christmas Day and feel better. Not because of the presents – but because Christmas is a sign to me that faith and joy are real. That Spirit is real. And that if we get through the challenge by doing our best, Christmas Day will come again. We just have to hang on. Joy lives. And there is always enough to go around as long as we believe in it.

You can imagine my joy when I was invited to do what I was born to do – write stories of intense emotional fiction – with my belief in the Christmas Spirit. My story was to incorporate magic in some fashion. I didn’t have to do a thing. I just had to write a Christmas story. The magic was already there. Built in.

And so I bring to you A Christmas Past – a story about Spirit. About loss of faith, doubt. About danger and today’s world. A story that embodies what I live for. What I believe in. No matter what assails us – in today’s world, or worlds past, or worlds to come – the Spirit will always be there. We need only get out of our own way and listen to our hearts. To dare to go deep where the emotions sometimes get messy, where feeling isn’t always easy, keep our hearts open, and the Spirit will be there waiting.

I wish you all the Joy of Christmas every day of your lives…

  1. Tara, your story sounds so–well, heartwarming! I’m looking forward to reading the whole set.
I love Christmas and hate that it’s gotten so commercial and so hectic. Going back to time with just family and enjoying the season sounds wonderful.
