Laughter echoed in his ears as he unholstered his cell while entering the hotel. There was no need to make the call. A vision of loveliness stood across the opulent lobby, right in his path. Ashley looked as if she’d stepped from the pages of a high fashion magazine. Her slow, oozing smile spread all over him.

Craig rolled her way. “You’re early.” The appreciative flicker shining in her eyes registered with him.

“So are you.” Ashley strode toward him.

“I wanted to make a good impression.”

“You’ve already done that.”

He wasn’t sure she was completely sincere. “That’s a nice thing to say.”

“It’s the truth.”

Her insistence was so soft and seemed filled with honesty. “You’ll be the prettiest thing there.” Ashley’s chic, alluring look entranced him. She blushed as he continued to stare. “I’m going to love being in your company.”

“I wish I shared your confidence.”

“You doubt I’ll be good company?”

“No! No! That’s not what I meant.” Embarrassment colored her cheeks rosy. “It’s just that…I haven’t been feeling very sociable lately. I don’t know what kind of company I’ll be.”

“Whew!” He whistled through his teeth. “Hit a rough patch, huh?”

“And the rough patch hit me back.”

Craig shifted beside her to take her hand. “Ashley, you may have taken a hit but look at you. You’re still standing.” Her jaw dropped. “No pun intended.”

“We’re going to be late.”

What he said appeared to fluster her, so she pushed on by him.
