I made my way out into the store, taking my time as I browed the narrow aisles. I flipped through the small music collection. I’d never been a fan of Country Classics, but it was about the only thing you could find in hole-in-the-wall fill stations out here. I moved to the maps of Kansas, Texas, Arkansas and Missouri. Thumbing through them, I wondered just how different one Midwest state really is from the next. After that, I made my way down the aisle of strange gas station knick knacks, hats, knives and t-shirts. I took my time to look at everything, but wasn’t really looking for anything in particular. I just needed to pass some time.
“Can I help ya’ find somethin’, sugar?” Loletta called from behind the counter.
That was my cue.
I headed over to the coffee station, grabbed a cup, and filled it with half dark roast and half hot chocolate. As I made my way to the register, I snagged a bag of peanuts and a couple cans of ravioli, taking care to not spill hot liquid down my front. As she rang up my purchase, I did my best to avoid staring at the mid-40’s cashier. I doubted anyone had ever told her that all that blue and red makeup made her look like a clown, but I certainly wasn’t going to be the one to break the news.
“That’ll be $6.85, sugar,” she said with a loud snap of her gum.
Not bothering with the small chat, I pulled out a ten dollar bill. I was just about to hand it over when I heard a familiar voice. I couldn’t tell what it had said, but the breezy, tinkling sound registered instantly. Only, it sounded like something was wrong.
Craning my neck towards the exit, I tried to see what all the commotion was about, but the backside of a police officer obstructed my view. I found myself being pulled in the direction of the doorway, but I wasn’t sure why.
“Hey!” Loletta called from behind me. “Ain’t ya gonna pay for your stuff?”
“I…uh…forgot something,” I answered over my shoulder, dismissing her with a distracted wave of my hand as I made my way closer to the last aisle of the store. When I rounded the large display of magazines, my suspicions were confirmed. It was her, the girl that had tormented my thoughts for days.
Willow.
Grabbing a magazine from the display rack, I opened it and pretended to read while eavesdropping on the conversation happening just a few feet away from me. At first, I was worried that she’d notice me, but her watery blue eyes were fixed on the officer in front of her as she gnawed at her bottom lip, strands of hair clinging to her tear-stained cheeks.
She looked like a little girl standing next to the six-odd food Officer Warren. She even sounded a little like one when she spoke. “I wasn’t stealing, I swear.”
But Officer Warren didn’t seem convinced. “Look, Miss, we can do this the easy way or the hard way. The easy way, you come with me quietly. The hard way…” He uncrossed his arms, brushing the shiny metal handcuffs attached to his side.
I didn’t think. I just reacted. “Excuse me, Officer?”
He hesitated for just a moment, as if afraid Willow might flee if he took her eyes off of her – not that she could with his massive frame blocking the doorway. He was so tall that even I cowered a bit when he finally turned his head in my direction, a strained smile plastered on his face.
“Josh?”
“Sorry to interrupt, but um…she’s with me.”
Turning the rest of his body towards me, he cocked a suspecting eyebrow and returned his chubby arms to their former location – his massive chest. “You know this girl?” He jutted a thumb in Willow’s direction.
“Yes, sir. I do,” I responded without hesitation, hoping he couldn’t see how hard I was working at swallowing the massive lump of fear in my throat.
He gave a low grunt. “Well, maybe you can tell me why she felt the need to lift a box of tampons.”
I shot Willow a quick glance over the officer’s shoulder, looking for the validity of his statement. Pleading blue eyes, guilt-ridden face, and a pink box of feminine products tucked under her arm said it all.What had I gotten myself into?

What made you decide you wanted to be a writer?
Deep down, I think I’ve always known. I started reading at four. When I was seven, I wrote my first book. It was a short, adorable little thing that I wrote for my mom. Along the way, I lost sight of that – maybe it was the responsibility of being a mom, or the idea that I was supposed to grow up and do the responsibility thing. Whatever the case, it kind of got buried in day to day life. Then, after my mother passed away, I found my book in her things. It all came flooding back, but again, I tossed it aside, figuring it was just too late. It wasn’t until I met my best friend that all that changed. I learned about Indie publishing and fell in love instantly.
How would you describe your books, in a nutshell?
Dark, twisty, angsty, with a lot of heart and a peppering of romance. That may change as I go along, but it definitely fits most of my current writing.
What has been your biggest struggle when it comes to writing and publishing?
I have to say my biggest struggle has been believing in myself enough to actually do it. At first, I wasn’t really sure I could tell a story that anyone else would enjoy. Plus, I’ve always been oversensitive, so the fear of rejection kind of kept me frozen for a few years. Thankfully, I’ve had some pretty amazing people in my life that believed in me until I could do it for myself.
Where do you draw your writing inspiration from?
Honestly, there’s not any one place that I find inspiration. It’s more of a conglomeration of personal experience, music, cinema, pop culture, books, and random ideas that seem to come out of nowhere. Each piece of the puzzle seems to play its own little role in the writing process for me.
Do you share any traits, characteristics, or traits with any of your characters?
Admittedly, I do. While each and every one of them is different, I find that I share certain struggles, personality traits, or nuances with most of my characters. And in so many ways, they teach me lessons about myself. I learn from them – the things they endure and somehow manage to overcome, the truths that they come to see and believe about the world around them or themselves. It’s a very interesting process, to say the least.
Do you have any favorite authors?
I do! But I have entirely too many to mention! Not just because I don’t want to exclude anyone, but also because I don’t read just one particular genre of book. I have my dark and twisty, contemporary, my guilty erotica reads, romance, zombies…needless to say, I’m extremely eclectic in my reading tastes.

As usual with these books, I’m using movie and TV titles for the chapter titles. In some cases, the plot of the movie or show actually matches what’s going on in the chapter. Sometimes it’s just the title of the movie, even though the actual plot couldn’t be farther from what’s going on in the book. I’ll leave it to you to imagine which is which…

L.A. Remenicky is a forty-something wife and mother of three fur kids. She has been an avid reader as long as she can remember. She used to disappear with a book when it was time to do dishes or clear the table.

“Dr. Parker? Your four o’clock appointment is here.” Sheila’s announcement made me jump and when I looked at the clock, I realized how much time had passed while I was deep in thought. This was the last appointment of the week, and I was ready for a couple of days off to unwind.
I shuffled the papers on my desk and found the new patient file I’d been reading when Sheila called. The file included official documents from police department internal affairs for a psychological evaluation. I’ve seen several of these orders over the years. It’s protocol whenever an active officer is wounded in the line of duty and is required before they’re allowed to return to work. I reached for the folder and pressed the intercom button. “Sheila, please send him in as soon as he’s filled out the insurance paperwork. Thank you.”
Sheila knew to give me a few extra minutes to allow time to limp to the conversation area to set the stage and sit in my customary spot. I preferred not to begin sessions with the inevitable questions about my own disability. The people who came to see me were in need of my expertise and compassion. It was all about their healing, not mine.
The name on the file folder, J. McKenna, gave me a chill. He was wounded in the line of duty, shot by a bank robbery suspect. Seeing the name reminded me of where I came from and why I was in hiding. I pushed the memories down. I’m not that person anymore. That person doesn’t exist. It wasn’t necessary to touch the locket underneath my sweater as a reminder, but it had become a nervous habit. The locket was the only thing I kept from that life.
The door opened, and Sheila showed my patient in and as my eyes met his, my heart stopped for what seemed like hours. After reading the file, I was afraid of this. How many Jackson McKennas could there be? The hair is shorter, and the face is older, but it’s him, I would know those eyes anywhere. Jackson McKenna. He was my first love and indirectly the reason I have to use a cane to walk farther than across the room.
I cleared my throat and stood, reaching out to shake his hand as I would with any new patient, hoping he didn’t recognize me.
“I’m Dr. Parker. Please make yourself comfortable, Officer McKenna, and we can get started.”
When I realized his right arm was in a sling, I dropped mine back to my side. I picked up my notepad and pen, hoping he didn’t see the way my hands were shaking.
“It’s actually Detective, not Officer.”
He sat on the couch across from me and looked at me with those hazel eyes that have haunted my dreams for ten years, and then he shook his head.
“You remind me of someone I used to know a long time ago.”

My bio – I’m twenty-three and I’m from Northern Ireland.I have two brothers and I grew up on a farm. I tend to write things in detail and give it a dramatic flare. I write to affect.Why should we read your book?Its a book that keeps you hooked, I know when I was writing it I was hooked! There’s plenty of action and suspense as well as a love story (or two). Dream Vacation update
Just checking in…
The new book is at a little over 33,000 words, with 6 chapters and change written. So 10 chapters and 40-50,000 words to go. This might end up being the shortest book of the series (unless something changes as I’m writing, which is always possible!). The book after that, “Shattered Dream,” will probably end up being longer (and a heck of a lot darker, too).

She clutched at his lapels and returned his kiss, even parting her lips when his tongue probed them. Overwhelmed by the sensations his lips provoked, she let her eyes drift shut as she clung to him.
When he let her go, he was still visibly upset. “There will be no more talk of infidelity. Have I made myself clear, Lydia?”

Q: Who is your favorite author?
A: Mary Jo Putney. I love her historical romances and think I’ve read all of them.
Q: How do you describe your writing style? Use no more than two sentences.
A: I’d say formal but not flowery.
Q: Why should we read your book?
A: Well, since this is a boxed set, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck minus one cent! Bundles are a great way to sample new authors.
Q: Have any of your characters been modeled after yourself?
I think there are bits of me in most of my female characters. Like Lydia in How To Woo… A Reluctant Bride, I was a bit of a wallflower when I was young, so it was fun to give her an eager groom and a happy ending.
Q: If you could exchange lives with any of your characters for a day which character would you choose and why?
A: Princess Ilona from Ilona’s Wolf: A Fairy Tale Romance. Ilona has magical powers, including telekinesis. That would come in handy when I leave my glasses or car keys on the other side of the room!
Q: What books have most influenced your life?
As a child, I loved Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and read it numerous times. Another book I loved is The Witch of Blackbird Pond. That’s the book that made me decide I wanted to write historical romance. Later, it was the works of Jane Austen.
Q: If you could select one book that you could rewrite and add your own unique twist on, which book would that be and why?
A: Forever Amber by Kathleen Winsor. I read it last year, and while the book was for the most part meticulously researched and rich in detail, I despised Amber. Not because she was sexually promiscuous but because she was a terrible person. I was hoping to see some kind of character arc as the book progressed, but she was still just as shallow and self-absorbed at the end as at the beginning, if not more so.
Q: Beatles or Monkees? Why?
A: The Beatles, because they were so creative and innovative, and their music will live forever. I liked the Monkees, but the group created and brought together by a recording studio, so not innovative at all.
Q: Who should play you in a film of your life?
A: Mayim Bialik (Amy Farrah Fowler on The Big Bang Theory)

Sneak Peek Sunday

DREAM CHILD is the third book in the Dream Series, and here’s a sneak peek from the prologue, where Sara learns something very troubling about her daughter:
Sara looks down, and she’s surprised to see her belly rather than her feet. She had no idea she would get this big this fast. It wasn’t like this the last time, with Lizzie, she thinks. But then, she reminds herself, Lizzie was just one – this time it’s two.
Sara walks into Lizzie’s room, where her daughter is sitting up in her bed, playing with a very old, very ratty stuffed rabbit.
“Lizzie, honey? Mommy needs to talk to you,” Sara says, and Lizzie sets Mister Pennington aside and looks up. Sara sees her own eyes staring at her, something that she wonders if she’ll ever get used to. She sits down on the bed, pats Lizzie on the head. “You know your friend Marnie?” Lizzie continues to look intently at Sara and nods her head up and down several times. “You know how she has a baby brother?” Lizzie continues to nod, not breaking eye contact with Sara. Sara wonders if this was how she was with her mother.
She’s about to continue when someone else walks into Lizzie’s room. Sara turns, but she knows before she does who she’ll see, and she knows – even though she’s never experienced this side of it before – exactly what’s going on.
Her daughter stands in the doorway, looking at Sara and another version of herself as well. Sara doesn’t say anything; she doesn’t want to scare Lizzie. Lizzie looks at herself briefly, but the image of herself seems to hold no interest. She focuses on Sara, concentrating all her three-year-old attention span on her mother.
“You’re so big, Mommy!”

Where’s Lizzie? She was standing in the doorway. She was – oh, my God.
She was seeing – she was inside – she saw me dreaming. She’s got it just like I do.
