You want to read a little more about it, first?  Well, Pamela’s thought of that, and provided us with an excerpt…

“Oh, Georgia! Lighten up!” Jersey shook her finger at Georgia. Georgia could tell her sister had been drinking not only by her behavior, but Jersey smelled of the beer or liquor. The two girls plus their fellow triplet, Virginia, were barely seventeen, and their step-sister Mallory was still sixteen. The four were about to be seniors in high school and their sibling was already an alcoholic.

Jersey and this male friend of hers both laughed then shushed each other like preschoolers about to get caught in an mischievous act. Georgia didn’t even know his name and didn’t remember ever seeing him before. Georgia rolled her eyes, knowing this was not going to get any better.
“How did he get in here?” Georgia asked. She put her hands on her hips, an action she had observed her mother doing over the past several years as all her older siblings had become teenagers. Georgia knew for a fact this boy did not enter through the front door of their house.

“How else?” Jersey slurred. “The window.”

“The window? We’re on the second floor!” Georgia put her head in her hands, exasperated. She’s been covering for her sister for more than two years now, but she wasn’t sure she could any longer. Jersey seemed to be getting herself deeper and deeper in trouble.

AND, Pamela’s not finished yet – she’s got a giveaway, too…

Thanks again for visiting! Be sure to leave a comment below to be entered to win a copy of her book in either print or electronic form.

Indie Author Spotlight – Sharon Stevenson

Indie Author Spotlight – Sharon Stevenson

I’m thrilled to spotlight a great fellow indie author this morning, Sharon Stevenson!

And her book is “Blood Bound”

bloodbound small

Here’s a little about “Blood Bound”:

19-year-old twin demon trackers Shaun and Sarah Gallows are used to running into trouble – mostly the kind with fangs – but while Sarah embraces her powers to their fullest extent, trusting her instincts implicitly, Shaun distances himself from his abilities and can do little more than despair at his sister’s reckless nature and idly back her up.

When they come across 17-year-old Melissa Carling, a demon tracker who’s been torturing innocent super-naturals, they know they have to stop her. Sarah is desperate to punish Melissa for what she’s been doing but Shaun’s instant attraction to the girl points to a soul-mate bond stronger than anything he’s ever had to fight before…

You can find the book on Amazon for only $0.99 – you can’t ask for a better bargain than that!   Look for it at Amazon.com or Amazon.uk.

Here’s a neat bit of original art for the book:

Sarah with sword

(this fantastic image was created by artist Laura Boland – find her at http://lauraboland.tumblr.com/)

And here’s an excerpt from the book (it goes nicely with the image above!):

A soft sigh pulled Shaun’s attention down to his twin sister.  Sarah stood steady beside him, staring into the darkness with a whisper of a smile twitching at her lips.  Her blue eyes shone bright past the dark eye-makeup.  It was time.  The energy she held so tightly coiled was ready to be unleashed.  Shaun felt the first sparks flicker from her as she slipped forward into the nest.   Shivering, he followed, ducking the doorframe.

Her right hand reached out and yanked one of the vampires out of the shadows.  The creature was a good foot taller than her and almost twice as wide but he trembled under her steady gaze, knees giving out under him.

Collective hissing from the darkness set Shaun’s nerves on edge.  There were a couple more than he’d first calculated and of the twenty presences in the room, every last glowing eye was locked on the petite blonde who’d just crashed the party.

Not one of the creatures appeared to sense Sarah’s lanky brother glowering at them with his one real eye from the shadows beside her, the usual case when she was around shining too brightly to be ignored.  Shaun half-thought Sarah did it on purpose; she worried far more than she should.  He shifted the stake in his hand, ready to strike, and looked to Sarah.

The vampire she held weakened under her touch.  He looked up at her with tears streaming down his undead face.  Blood stained his slack mouth.  The human girl he’d been feeding on lay dying on the floor under the cover of shadows, her drained body past help.  The girl’s life-force was ebbing away and yet the sympathy overflowing from his sister was being extended to the monster she held, for the awful things that had set him on this path.

Shaun frowned at her.  The vampire sobbed at her feet, clinging onto her slim legs.  She pulled back, but only to crouch down beside him.  The other eyes only watched, unblinking.

“Ssh,” she whispered, stroking the side of his face.  He shivered under the direct touch of her skin to his.  His fever-bright eyes sank into her black-hole gaze.

She had the sword in her hand before any of the vampires could react.  The blade sliced through her chosen one’s neck, unmaking him in an instant.  The smoky burnt-out mulch his body collapsed into seasoned the air.  Shaun held his breath, trying vainly not to inhale any while it still clung to the atmosphere.  The stillness in the room started to unnerve him.  The captive undead audience poised to strike, ready and remorseless.

Sarah wiped off the sword and looked up, death in her gaze.

“Who’s next?”

New Book and More New Books?

New Book and More New Books?

Four chapters completed, and another, later chapter mostly written – so close to 1/3 of the way done with the next book in the Dream Series (still using “Dream Home” as a working title).

And I think I have an idea for the next book – something that both is and isn’t part of the Dream Series.  I’m thinking it’s time for Sara’s best friend to have a turn in the spotlight.  I’ve also got (what I hope is) a good idea of how to tell her story, and what that story will be.  And I definitely have a title: “The Beth Sessions”  We’ll see if I can pull off what I’m envisioning…

Looking Back Again – Get Hooked on “Dream Doctor”

logo book hooks

Here’s another edition of Book hooks, and I’m going back to the second book in the Dream Series, DREAM DOCTOR.  It follows Sara to medical school, and another mystery for her to unravel – if she can find the time, between life as a newlywed, the rigors of med school and a friend’s personal crisis.

Here’s a scene from midway through the book, but I think it gives a good sense of what’s going on:

Sara is in her living room, but she knows immediately that this isn’t her dream.  She sees Brian sitting on the small loveseat, watching a baseball game on their tiny TV but she can tell that it isn’t his dream either.  She’s confused – whose dream is it?

The doorknob turns, the door opens, and the answer is revealed: Barbara from next door.  Barbara the tall and attractive law student, who’s currently wearing a bathrobe and – Sara is absolutely certain of this – nothing underneath it.

“Your wife’s not here,” Barbara coos as she approaches Brian.  He says nothing, shows no reaction at all.  “You don’t want to do anything that would hurt her.  I admire that, you know.  That’s how a real man ought to act,” she says, stepping between him and the TV.

Sara smiles as Brian continues to not react to her, except for tilting his head to see past her to the TV.  She does not smile when Barbara sighs, takes Brian’s head in her hands and forces him to look at her.  “You are a good man.  But you’re only human,” she says, and then, letting go of him, she unties her robe and lets it fall to the floor…

***

“Get out of my room, you whore!”  I hear myself shouting at someone, but who?  There’s nobody here.  Brian’s in the shower, I can hear the water going.  And why would I call him a whore?  That makes no sense.

Not Brian.  I was dreaming.  I saw – God, I saw Barbara!  The woman who lives next door to us.  The married woman who lives next door to us.  I saw her dream.  And she was dreaming about seducing Brian.  “Whore” is far too good a word for her.

She’s dreaming about my husband.  My husband!  Who the hell does she think she is?  She’s got her own husband!  She should be dreaming about him, not Brian.  Granted, I think her husband is an ass and I’m pretty sure she does too, but still.  She can’t have mine!

This is very strange.  I can’t remember ever feeling jealous like this before.  But then again, before Brian I never had anybody worth being jealous over.  I know this is completely irrational.  I have nothing whatsoever to worry about.  I’m in his heart and I always will be.  Me and nobody else.  Especially if last night was anything to go by.

Still, I’m going to keep a close eye on her.  And if she so much as puts a hand on him, I’ll cut her heart out.  I know how to do it, too.   I’ve been reading ahead – the instructions are right there in Grant’s Dissector. Page 75.

I think I’ll mark the page with a post-it note.  Just in case.

Sara’s Family Tree

Sara’s Family Tree

Here’s a little bit of backstory for the Dream Series; a (very small part of) Sara’s family tree.  She’s about to meet her Great Aunt Mindy, and Mindy’s going to reveal a secret that neither Sara nor her parents had any idea about.  But to make sure I got it right, I needed to sketch out exactly where Sara came from.  And here it is:

Blog Hop – My Writing Process!

Blog Hop – My Writing Process!

I’m thrilled to be participating in the “My Writing Process” blog hop.  And before I start, I want to thank Rochelle Weber, who invited me to participate.

So, what’s my writing process?  And what am I working on now?

What am I working on?

I’m working on book #7 of the Dream Series (tentatively, I’m calling it “Dream Home” but that may change).  The series follows Sara, a woman who has the ability to step into other people’s dreams.  Over the course of the books, she’s gone from a shy, bookish college student to a doctor, wife and mother of five.  She’s also helped to capture a serial killer, discover who was trying to poison one of her professors, unravel a plot between a mobster and a corrupt politician, and more.

In the new book, Sara and her family have moved to a small town in upstate New York.  Sara has to contend with resentful co-workers, a teenage daughter growing up a lot faster than she’d prefer, and a natural disaster that will endanger everyone in the town.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I think my books are unique because of the way they balance romance, suspense, the supernatural twist of Sara’s dreams, and the details of everyday life – work and family and all the little challenges everyone faces.

I think that’s what makes the books – and Sara in particular – so relatable.  Yes, she has this talent, but she still has to get up and go to work, drive the kids to school, take the dog out even if it’s miserable out, etc.  I think in that way, my books are very true to life.

I also think I’ve managed to come up with a unique voice for Sara, and I’ve had many readers compliment me on that, so that tells me I’ve done a good job.

Why do I write what I do?

Because Sara’s story is the one in my head.  It really is as simple as that.  I feel as though I know her and her family as well as many people in my actual life!

I have several other ideas I’d like to work on, but Sara will not rest – she insists that I keep writing about her (she can be very stubborn that way!).

How does my writing process work?

I don’t know that I have a specific “process.”  I just sit down and write.  I don’t outline or plan out the books in great detail.  I have a general sense of the story, and I know what the ending will be, but past that, I just see what happens.  Many of the subplots and secondary characters have been a complete surprise to me.

In one case, the entire book changed as I was writing it.  I had originally intended the fourth book in the series, “Dream Family,” to be about Sara encountering someone else who shared her dreaming ability – but was using it for selfish, evil purposes, and Sara would have to confront and stop her.  I decided that at some point in the story, to create a minor obstacle for her, Sara would be arrested and spend a night in jail.  I imagined it as a small incident, and something she might find herself even laughing about afterwards.  But when I began writing it, the scene changed almost immediately to something very dark.  Sara’s experience in the jail became traumatic, and one small scene turned into 10,000 words about Sara being terribly mistreated to the point that she had a total mental breakdown.

I realized THAT was the story of the book – putting Sara through that, and then showing how – or even if – she could recover from it.  And in my opinion, it’s the best-written book of the series.

I did end up using the original plot for the next book – never throw anything away!

Next week, I’ve picked three fellow authors to continue the hop, so please visit them, too!  They are:

Indie Author Spotlight – Lisa Marie Gabriel and “The Cougar”

Indie Author Spotlight – Lisa Marie Gabriel and “The Cougar”

I’ve got another fantastic indie author for you today – Lisa Marie Gabriel and her new novel, “The Cougar.”

At Home In Golden Ears December 2012

Lisa Marie Gabriel is a UK based author, composer, musician and poet. She divides her time as best she can between family and friends in England and in British Columbia which she loves and considers her second home. “When I go to BC, you are most likely to find me in Golden Ears, probably hiking the Lower Falls Trail, or simply lazily dreaming by the side of Alouette Lake. I also absolutely adore Victoria – and boats – I love boats!”
She has recently published her first novel, The Cougar, which was inspired by her love for Golden Ears and an interest in vampires and shape shifters. As a writer, her first love is poetry but she has also written music education material, has edited and published The Cat the Bat and the Burglar for Colin Edward Mason and enjoys photography and design too. “I consider myself a Renaissance woman” she says, adding “unfortunately I do not possess Berenice’s immortality!”

Lisa is also an established composer and musical arranger and has recorded her own album, Flying to Meet the Sunrise, which is available on CD (exclusive to Amazon.com) and MP3 format. She has also executed musical commissions for other writers including A Peaceful Celtic Spring. Other books released by Lisa on Amazon include the poetry anthology “A Whisper of the Romantic in the Eye of God” and a technical dissertation analysing the songs of Ralph Vaughan Williams, “On Wenlock Edge 100 Years On”.

Of her latest work of fiction, The Cougar, she says “It’s a penny dreadful, a rollicking read; though I hope it has a little artistic merit too. It was fun to write and I hope you will find it as much fun to read. I wanted to convey a few challenging ideas about love and spirituality in a light way and also what a treasure the forests of British Columbia are. In that respect, it is a work written out of love!”
You can follow Lisa on Facebook.
And here’s the book!
The Cougar cover
Angela Bradley’s marriage is on the rocks. She and husband Owen take a second honeymoon to try and remedy the situation, a trip of a lifetime to British Columbia, but little does Angela know that saving their marriage is the last thing on Owen’s mind. He has arranged to meet up with Ingrid and continue his affair. Whilst there Angela meets Berenice, an elegant widow of Italian descent, who is seeking to come to terms with her husband’s violent and tragic death. The two women seem inexplicably attracted to each other, but Berenice is older…. much, much older…. and she has an amazing secret or two up her sleeve! This Gothic romance novel flits from Renaissance Florence to the forests of modern day British Columbia as the story of the two women unfolds and Owen comes to a sticky end. It is suitable for adults 18+ to read as it deals with themes of vampirism, shape-shifting, death, and explicit love scenes….
You can buy it on Amazon (on Kindle or in paperback).  You can also buy her other books:
And here’s an excerpt from “The Cougar:
The journey to Gubbio was harrowing. Berenice and Raffaelo travelled at night over rough roads, often uphill, and in the daytime they would rest hidden away like gypsies in the forest clearings. The bread was soon gone. There was no question of stopping at an inn to rest or eat. They had no intention of leaving any sort of trail for the mob to follow.
“I know it is hard my love,” Raffaelo said to his wife, “but you are the only thing on this Earth that really matters to me. If I lose you, I might as well be dead.”
He would bring spring water to her when he could, which he diluted with grappa to disinfect it. Neither of them had eaten in days, and Berenice was weak and feverish.
“If you die, I shall never forgive myself. This horrible mess is all my fault!”
“What do you mean? How could that be?” she replied and stroked his cheek with her soft hand.
Raffaelo looked distant, he knew she needed to eat something soon; she was far too weak and ill.
“I must find something for us to eat,” he told her, “I won’t be long.”
In a little under half an hour he was back, cradling a dead roe deer, in his strong arms.
“How did you do that?” she murmured in wonder.
“Something I learned as a boy in Umbria” he answered. “We country boys all know how to track the Capriolo!”
Raffaelo cleared the ground for a small fire, built up in a cone shape. Inside there was down from dandelions and slivers of birch bark. This he surrounded with small dry twigs, then larger ones. He took a tinderbox from his pouch and struck a spark, then coaxed the tiny flame to life. When the fire was established, he built it up with larger pieces of wood and laid logs around the rim to dry out.
With consummate skill, he skinned and removed the entrails of the deer and then constructed a makeshift spit from straight branches of common elderberry or Sambuca trees. He crushed a few purple Sambuca berries with the flat of his knife and rubbed it into the carcass to marinate the meat. Berenice was fading in and out of consciousness by now as she was so hungry. Raffaelo roused her with a gentle shake and handed her a mouthful of the purple berries he had gathered.
“Eat these, they will not harm you!” he said and she took them from him, trusting his knowledge and skill.
Raffaelo continued to turn the carcass over and over above the now merry fire until it started to look brown and the juices were running onto the embers below. Taking his knife from his belt again, he cut slices from the back of the deer.
“These will be the best, my love, they are the most tender.”
She took the meat he offered gratefully and ate. “What about you?” she asked.
“I had my share while you were sleeping. I am fine!”
After her meal, she again fell into a slumber, Raffaelo knew that evening would be approaching soon and they would have to be on their way. Using his knife, he butchered the roast carcass, wrapping the shoulders, forequarters and hind quarters in some fine muslin they had brought. The head and neck of the Capriolo he tossed to one side while he kicked earth over what remained of the fire to put it out. On the deer’s neck were two small wounds in the jugular. They were about the same distance apart as the canines of a very large cat….
Last, but certainly not least, I’ve got an interview with Lisa…
Who is your favorite author?
That is a question I can’t answer because I don’t have one. I never have! There are many authors I love, but my reading tends to be capricious. I admire Oscar Wilde because of his exquisite language, humour and versatility but equally well there is D.H. Lawrence, Edgar Allen Poe, Charlotte Bronte.… so many great writers. I couldn’t be English without loving Shakespeare either. Recently I have enjoyed David Michie’s writing very much “The Art of Purring” and “The Dalai Lama’s Cat” are both beautiful books. I also greatly enjoyed Alice Sebold’s writing in The Lovely Bones. As I write about vampires, I have to say my favourite vampire authors are Bram Stoker and of course Anne Rice.
How do you describe your writing style?
Concise but descriptive: I write poetry and in poetry it is vital to avoid redundancy. I like every word to count but I enjoy imagery and musicality in language. My novel is shorter than many but I think an awful lot happens in those words on the page. I try to avoid being too wordy because I want the reader to be truly involved and swept along by the action.
Use no more than two sentences. Why should we read your book?
You should read my book because you want to be part of something rich, adventurous and strange. If the concept of immortality fascinates, but you wonder what it really means to possess it, you might well enjoy The Cougar.
Have any of your characters been modelled after yourself?
I think there is a little part of me invested in all of them, but obviously mostly the girls. Angela reminds me of when I was in my twenties, she is active, very much the outdoor type but quiet and shy. Berenice is the version of me I would most like to be if I could; she is elegant, educated and wise. Ingrid has a cold and calculating side that I do find I have to watch out for.
If you could exchange lives with any of your characters for a day which character would you choose and why?
I would choose Berenice, because to be so in touch with nature and so completely part of it would be wonderful. I would love to be able to shape shift, to dance with fireflies and to control life and death. Also to know that I have an infinite number of tomorrows to enjoy!
What books have most influenced your life?
Well, I have a definite longing for adventure and the wilds, so probably Wuthering Heights and She by Rider Haggard. I was struck by Wilfred Owen’s war poetry; it is so powerful, the language and musicality of his words when dealing with such a horrendous subject. In contrast, I love Dylan Thomas – he always casts magic with his words. A Child’s Christmas in Wales was something I grew up with, listening to a record of Dylan Thomas read his own work interspersed with the most wonderful music. Kahlil Gibran’s “The Prophet” is a work I still turn to on a regular basis – I often just dip into it randomly when I feel challenged by anything in life.
If you could select one book that you could rewrite and add your own unique twist on, which book would that be and why?
Frankenstein, because I always felt the “monster” was unfairly treated by all the humans, especially his maker who always struck me as paranoid and distinctly lacking in compassion. I always found Victor Frankenstein a bit of a worm to be honest – I guess you might call him a jerk in the USA. In my version of Frankenstein, the monster does not murder Victor’s little brother William but attempts to save him. The true child killer escapes and it is only when the killer returns and attempts to murder Victor’s fiancée that the plot unravels in a very different way.
Beatles or Monkees? Why?
I choose the Beatles, because they composed their own songs and are still a musical legend.
Who should play you in a film of your life?
Well, Elizabeth Taylor is dead, Katherine Deneuve is possibly too old, Cote de Pablo is probably too young – so that leaves me with the wonderful Meryl Streep who can play absolutely anybody. I feel she could even play Richard the Third if she had a mind to; also she has a pedigree of playing English ladies extremely well.

Intisar currently resides in Cincinnati, Ohio, with her husband and two young daughters. Until recently, she wrote grants and developed projects to address community health and infant mortality with the Cincinnati Health Department—which was as close as she could get to saving the world. Now she focuses her time on her two passions: raising her family and writing fantasy.

Intisar’s latest projects include a serial novella project titled The Sunbolt Chronicles, about a young thief with a propensity to play hero, and her arch-nemesis, a dark mage intent on taking over the Eleven Kingdoms. She’s also developing a companion trilogy to her debut novel Thorn, which will feature a new heroine introduced in her free short story The Bone Knife.
